Test match = 5 days cricket = 450 overs = 2700 balls.
Indeed, test matches are not only won by bowlers alone, as you have to take 20 wickets to win a test.. but also by scoring huge totals. When your opponent batsmen see tall target overhead, their motivation fails and instead of just batting out the remaining days, they throw away their wickets.
In following, we've listed the biggest scores ever made in Australia vs England test matches, aka the Ashes test series which is the oldest in world of cricket.. you would note that although England own the largest total record, Australians have posted more big team scores than their rivals over the years.
England's record 903/7dec was made at Kennington oval ground back in August 1938. Len Hutton scored 364 while opening the batting which still remains the highest score by a batsman in Ashes. Maurice Leyland helped with 187 runs while Joe Hardstaff Junior rubbed it into Aussies with another century (169 runs), batting at 7. Groundsman, Bosser Martin, was also the scorer of this match and he had made up a temprorary scoreboard on a heavy roller. naturally, he had a hard time putting up those tall scores in that test match!
Australia scored only 201 and 123 in their two innings and lost that match by wooping margin of an innings and 579 runs.. which still is the highest victory margin in Australia vs England test matches.
Among the recent big totals, Australia got upto 602 for 9 wickets at Brisbane of in the first test of 2006 Ashes series which England lost 5-nil.
