The Big Bash League is the highlight of Australia’s domestic season and I’ll now run you through each of the teams that are taking part. Also, see all Big Bash League squads listed.
How Many Teams are in the Big Bash League?
As of 2021/22, there are eight teams involved in the Big Bash League and they are based right across Australia.
There has been talk of maybe adding some sides and expanding the competition but that is the position for the eleventh edition of the competition.
List of BBL Teams
Adelaide Strikers
As with all eight teams currently playing in the BBL, the Adelaide Strikers have been involved in all 11 editions of the tournament.
They have one Big Bash title to their name and that came in the 2017/18 season when they beat Hobart Hurricanes in the final. The Strikers play their home games at the Adelaide Oval.
They are a dangerous side with some powerful hitters and players to watch moving forward include Travis Head, Alex Carey, Rashid Khan and Matthew Renshaw.

Brisbane Heat
Brisbane Heat won the second edition of the Big Bash in 2012/13 but this was the only time they reached the final in the first ten years. The team plays at the Gabba which is a familiar and historic ground used by the Australian national side.
Key players for Brisbane in 2021/22 and beyond include Chris Lynn, Mujeeb ur Rahman, Marnus Labuschagne and Ben Duckett.

Hobart Hurricanes
The Hobart Hurricanes are one of only two franchises who failed to win any of the first ten editions of the BBL. They reached the final twice in that time, in 2013/14 and 2017/18.
The team plays home games at the Bellerive Oval and the University of Tasmania Stadium and key current players include Ben McDermott, Tim David, D’Arcy Short and Riley Meredith.

Melbourne Renegades
The Melbourne Renegades were Big Bash Champions in 2018/19 and they’ve been led for a long time by Australia’s limited overs captain Aaron Finch. Other big names in the current Renegades’ squad include Marcus Harris, James Pattinson, Kane Richardson and Mohammad Nabi.
The team plays their home games at the Docklands Stadium in Melbourne.

Melbourne Stars
Despite making it through to the playoffs on eight separate occasions, the Melbourne Stars failed to win any of the first ten Big Bash tournaments. They have, however, been beaten finalists three times.
The Stars play their home matches at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and notable players for 2021/22 and beyond include Nathan Coulter-Nile, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis and Adam Zampa.

Perth Scorchers
Over the first ten editions of the competition, the Perth Scorchers have won three BBL titles and that’s a joint record. Their opening win came in 2013/14 and they followed that up with victories in 2014/15 and 2016/17.
The Scorchers play at the Optus Stadium and top current players include Ashton Agar, Josh Ingliss, A.J. Tye and Colin Munro.

Sydney Sixers
Along with Perth Scorchers, Sydney Sixers hold the record for most BBL wins with three titles in the first ten years. The Sixers won the first ever Big Bash in 2010/11 and have followed that up with victories in 2019/20 and 2020/21.
They play their games at the Sydney Cricket Ground and Sydney’s current key players include Sean Abbott, Nathan Lyon, Josh Philippe and James Vince.

Sydney Thunder
Having finished no better than seventh in the first four editions of the BBL, Sydney Thunder caused an upset when they won the fifth tournament in 2015/16. That remains the only victory to date for the men who play their home games at the Sydney Showground.
