Yes, Marlon Samuels has done it. The West Indies have finally pulled off a World Cup victory after 33 years as they beat the hosts Sri Lankans by a convincing 36 runs at the Premadasa Stadium on Sunday. The hero for West Indies was Samuels who played a fantastic match winning Knock of 78 off 56 balls. Sunil Narine took 3/9 and skipper Darren Sammy reserved his best for finals as he scored an unbeaten 26 from just 15 balls and took 2/6 from his 2 overs. The only thing that was missing was Gayle storm but that was compensated by Marlon Samuels by his splendid innings. Even a magnificent 4/12 from Ajantha Mendis couldn’t help Sri Lanka.

West Indies inflicted a crushing 74 run defeat over Australia here at Premadasa to storm the finals of the ICC Twenty 20 international. Sheer dominance! It was Gayle storm once again that proved the trump card for the Windies as he scored a brilliant 75 from just 41 balls despite having very less of the strike. Pollard too hit a swash buckling 38 off just 15 balls as he and Gayle went on the rampage in the final overs.
Windies score of 205/4 was the highest of the tournament so far. Interestingly today they hit more sixes than boundaries. In total there were 14 sixes and 13 boundaries hit off the hapless Aussies bowlers. Gayle hit 6 of ... .. Read complete article |

Sri Lanka put in a professional performance on a crumbling wicket lead by their captain Mahela Jayawardene and their bowlers to beat Pakistan by a convincing margin of 16 runs in the first semi final of the ICC Twenty 20 world cup here at the Premadasa Stadium. On a pitch where most batsmen found tough to keep the scoreboard tickling, Mahela Jayawardene played a special 42 with 7 boundaries and later on made the right bowling changes to outsmart a dangerous Pakistan side.
Interestingly, this was Sri Lanka’s first victory at Premadasa, having lost all previous 4 T20 games here..
Earlier the Lankan captain Jayawardene won the toss and had decided to bat first. Both ... .. Read complete article |

Truth be told, it's important for an international cricket tournament to succeed, that Indian team goes deep into it because once blue team is out, half the viewership goes away. Probably this was the reason ICC scheduled World T20 2012 in such a way that Indians play the last league game in Super 8s round, giving them every chance to qualify for knock-out rounds. Today, after heavy defeat against Australia and inspired win over arch rivals Pakistan, blue boys needed solid win over South Africans to better their net run rate. They won, but only by 1 run, and hence knocked-out..
The toss, once again, didn't land in MS Dhoni's favour and Proteas captain AB de Villiers was ... .. Read complete article |

Pakistan are famous as a unpredictable team. Most times, they'll shoot themselves on foot but some times, they'll also score a win out of no where. After an unlikely victory over South Africans, green team today came from a lot behind to keep their semi-final hopes alive..
It was an obvious decision to bowl first from Aussies seeing the results in previous games and it worked out well too, with Pakistani top order struggling to collect runs freely. As it turned out, it was a tactical ploy from Dave Whatmore and co. to consolidate in first half. Nasir Jamshed and Kamran Akmal displayed some smart batting to accelerate the scoring at the right moment and then Abdul Razzaq ... .. Read complete article |

Sri Lankans, at home, have found form and are now the team to beat. Today, they knocked out defending champions England out of the tournament as they completed full house in super 8s round and qualify for semi-finals..
It was a truely dominated match from Sri Lankans, even though win margin was just 19 runs. Invited in to bat first, home team started to collect runs at will with Mahela Jayawardene going great guns. Angelo Mathews, Jeevan Mendis and Lahiru Thirimanne kept the rate up during the middle overs while Thisara Perera finished the innings on a high. Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann bowled well but rest of the bowlers didn't contribute much.

New Zealand were not considered a contender for the title when the tournament began but they reached super 8s round comfortably. Then onwards, their luck has just vanished. After Sri Lankans snatched away the super over earlier, today West Indies did the same to Kiwis, booking their ticket back home..
It was highly interesting super over in which Ross Taylor lead the way, collecting a six and a four to put significant target of 17 runs for Windies but Chris Gayle hit first ball, which was a no ball, for a six to began on a high. Marlon Samuels hit a six himself to close out the match with a ball remaining.

Up against a strange fact that Indians hadn't won a single super 8s game in World T20 since winning the trophy back in 2007, losing all 3 games in 2009 and 2010 edition, today they had even bigger challenge, confronting arch rivals Pakistan. But, green team just refused to rise to the contest today and blue boys got home by big margin which now takes them ahead of Pakistan in net run rate..
Chasing below average target, Indians suffered early blow with Gautam Gambhir giving a return catch to 20 year old Raza Hasan but Virender Sehwag, unlike his usual self, was prepared to grind. What is the record of most consecutive man of the match awards? Shane Watson is going for it. Today, Aussie allrounder stole the show for the 4th time running in the tournament and gave his team yet another solid win, this time over South Africans who tried their best but couldn't avoid second defeat in super 8s..
It was an interesting decision from George Bailey to invite Proteas in to bat first but his trick of using Xavier Doherty worked admirably. Doherty castled Richard Levi 3rd ball of the game and then claimed prized wicket of Jacques Kallis first ball of his next over. Sri Lankans began the tournament midly, fetching easy win over Zimbabwe but then losing to South Africans in rain curtailed game but, now into super 8s round, they're looking like the team to beat. After handsome win over New Zealand, today home team crushed powerhouse Windies by 9 wickets which now almost assures them of a semi-final spot..
Electing to bat first, Windies went no where with Chris Gayle taking his time and then getting out. Something similar was story from Johnson Charles and by the time Powerplays were over, run rate was below 3 with both openers gone. We're now reaching the business end of World T20 2012 and every lost will almost cost dearly to every team. Today, defending champions England managed a comfortable yet important win over New Zealand. Luke Wright was the architect of the victory while Steven Finn made the significant difference with the ball. Kiwis had James Franklin inspiring them mid-way through the innings but he couldn't do as much as was required..

Aussies may be ranked as low as seventh in ICC T20 rankings, they're always a force to fear from, specially in world tournaments as they tend to play better as a team than most. Today, green and gold team just didn't allow Indians to win any moment in the match and fetched a win that will better their net run rate as well..
Up against moderate target of 141, Aussie chase was halted by mild rain only after 3 balls but that game openers David Warner and Shane Watson the plan to face Indian spinners. After less than 15 mins break, both came out all guns blazing and once power plays were over, they just lofted the ball ... .. Read complete article |

A clash between South Africa ~ a team that is big on fast bowling and Pakistan ~ a team that has world class spinners, it was bound to be a game about batsmen from which side do better. As it turned out, Pakistan got home when there was almost no hope remaining..
Electing to bat first, South Africans were cautious yet continued to lose wickets at regular intervals as Raza Hasan, Saeed Ajmal, Shahid Afridi and Mohammad Hafeez bowled utterly economically. Thanks to JP Duminy and captain AB de Villiers, Proteas got upto a mark they could fight for but it was never going to be easy.

Since late 2008 when super over was first introduced in Twenty20 cricket, we've had just two games that were decided by the method untill today when Sri Lankans sneeked past New Zealand by 6 runs. This was the first time Super Over was used in World T20 tournament..
Electing to bat first, New Zealand made a steady beginning which flourished nicely untill Martin Guptill was claimed by 18 year old debutant Akila Dhananjaya. Brendon McCullum stretched his side straight after playing his first shot but that didn't stop him from accelerating the rate even further with couple of sixes. Easily one of the best batting efforts Bangladesh have put forward in recent times, it was sad to see them not able to push the game into the last over, if not upset senior Pakistan team all together. Bangla boys not just needed to win this game, they also had to better their net run rate and they did so well, but just not enough..
Electing to bat first, Bangladesh were off to flying start with Tamim Iqbal depositing almost every second ball to boundary before he got run out. In a tournament in Asia, Indians are always a contender, specially only a year after they lifted the World cup at home. That being said, Indians have under-performed in recent past months and lacked tricks to fail the opposition. Today, they had a trick = twicking their eleven upside down. Irfan Pathan got to open both batting and bowling and two specialist spinners were included. Both changes worked, and wonderfully at it. English bowling did a reasonable job but batsmen just refused to build partnerships, panicking againt quality spin bowling in helpful conditions. England ended up with their lowest T20 total ever while Indians notched up their biggest win by run margins = 90.

Highest score in T20 cricket is an intriguing list with just 7 batsmen scoring centuries but none of them had repeated the feat. Today, Brendon McCullum became the first batsman to have two century in twenty20 international cricket, and now also owns the biggest one..

Defeat is almost certain for minnows whenever they meet a strong nation but there's always a certain team they hate losing to.
