Traditionally a batting beauty, Kennington Oval hosted this last test match on Pakistan's tour of England and visitors won a good toss which nearly sealed the series for them as they had 1-0 lead coming into this match. Opener Rameez Raja and No.3 Manzoor Akhtar missed out but Mudassar Nazar (73), Javed Miandad (260), Saleem Mallik (102) cashed in. At Gaddafi stadium in Lahore, captain Mike Gatting elected to bat first but right from first wicket of opener Graham Gooch, Qadir started to spell his magic over English batters. 1 wkt for 22 to 8 wkts for 94, Englishmen were saved by tailenders to give them some sort of score of 175 allout ... .. Pakistan and England have played many test matches that went down to the wire but the one I feel was the closest one was at Multan in November 2005, the first test of last time England toured Pakistan..
Electing to bat first, captain Inzamam-ul-Haq had to score a crucial half century to push his team to a respectable 1st innings total of 274 against a fired up Andrew Flintoff who took 4 wickets. England reply was solid, thanks to 193 by Marcus Trescothick and quick 45 by Flintoff. Visitors had scored their runs at almost 4 run per over which made sure plenty of time remained in the game and Pakistan could crawl their way back into the ... .. Read complete article |
