England captain Andrew Strauss lauded his team’s performance after England beat West Indies by 5 wickets at Lord’s in the first of the three test match Investec series. Giving credit where it’s due, the English skipper acknowledged that it was no walk in the park for his team and admitted that West Indies had indeed given them more than a few tense moments..
Exclaiming that he was more than happy with his main men – Alistair Cook and Ian Bell – Strauss spoke to the English Cricket Board website and said, “Whenever you’re chasing, there’s a bit of pressure so it was an outstanding effort from Cook and Bell,” the skipper said, “They played in a very classy ... .. If yesterday was warm and cloudy, today the players walked out to a chilly sunday morning at Lord's. West Indies ended yesterday at 120/4. England still had a lead of 35 runs and they had just 6 more West Indian wickets to pick. The only problem being, one of those 6 wickets would be of a certain Shivnarine Chanderpaul. Currently the best test match cricket batsman, Chanderpaul is no stranger to pressure situations, getting his team out of a rut and not throwing his wicket away at any cost. West Indies were hoping for another one of his specials and that is exactly what he did. He scored 91 (after his first innings' 87 not out) and put together a ... .. Read complete article |

It was a warm a cloudy Saturday at Lord’s. A day for happy English cricket campers to come and absorb some cricketing action. Chelsea is playing Bayern Munich today and one was expecting a personality vacuum today, but no such thing. Fans turned up in decent numbers wondering if Andrew Strauss would go on to make a monumental century (or even make his first ever double century) and if England will put in enough runs on the board to not have to come back and bat the second time..
England resumed at 259/3 – 16 runs ahead of the West Indies. In the past, whenever Andres Strauss resumed an overnight century, never made more than 6 runs more. ... .. Read complete article |

It's not common for someone to be listed on Lord's Honour Boards for both - Batting and Bowling. England fast bowler Stuart Broad found himself in the company of champion all-rounders Andrew Flintoff and Ian Botham, when he picked up 7 for 72 against West Indies on day one (plus one ball on day two) of the first test in the three match Investec test series.
A couple of years back, Broad had scored a staggering 169 against Pakistan on this very ground, also referred to as the 'Mecca of cricket.'
Established to incentivize cricketing excellence at Lord's, the Honour boards are found in each of the two main dressing rooms in the pavillion.

England captain Andrew Strauss made a masterful century to give his side a 16 run lead over the visiting West Indies side. England ended day 2 of the first test at 259/3.
Earlier, yesterday's hero for the West Indies Shivnarine Chanderpaul and debutant number 11 Shannon Gabriel walked out in the chilly morning with hopes to be able to somehow survive to first hour against the in-form English bowling attack and go on to make a respectable score. However, that was not to be. Gabriel fell to the very first ball of the day. He was out caught at second slip by Swann, edging an unplayable (for a number 11 batsman especially) delivery by Stuart Broad, taking Broad's ... .. Read complete article |

England has traditionally been vulnerable to spin. They have tried promoting spin among their domestic players, employed spinners from the sub-continent to play county matches and coach their players as well and yet, despite being the team to beat this year, if there’s one chink in the English armoury, it’s handling spin bowling. One cannot forget England batting great Mike Gatting getting bamboozled by a Shane Warne delivery. The delivery has gone on to be regarded as ‘The ball of the century.’
This IPL, West Indian bowler of Indian origin Sunil Narine has been making heads turn just as much as his deliveries. Being one of Kolkata Knight Riders’ bowling mainstays, Narine has quickly emerged as an MVP ... .. Read complete article |

West Indies could have been staring at the firing end of the barrel if not for the heroics of Shivnarine Chanderpaul on day 1 of the first test at Lords..
Chanderpaul battled it out while wickets kept tumbling at the other end, to make an unbeaten 87 at stumps as West Indies retired to their dressing room at 243 for 9 wickets. Adrian Barath too pitched in with a well fought out 42 to give something for the West Indies bowlers to defend when they come out to bowl tomorrow. Of course, West Indies still has one wicket in hand, with Chanderpaul still batting, yet it seems unlikely that the West Indian number 11 batsman, debutant Shannon Gabriel ... .. The once formidable West Indies side that had the potential to send shivers down batmen’s spines have, today been reduced to being hardly a force to reckon with, hugely dependent on the volatile Chris Gayle, whose participation in the side isn’t even confirmed..
The West Indies of yesteryears boasted of bowlers such as Wes Hall, Malcolm Marshall, Joel Garner, Andy Roberts and Michael Holding. The batting had Rohan Kanhai, Gary Sobers, Viv Richards, Clive Lloyd and even the era to follow had Brian Lara and the menacing pace duo of Courtney Walsh and Curtly Ambrose.
Former cricketers and some analysts blame the lucre of the IPL. However, another way of looking at things is that if ... .. Read complete article |

West Indies cricket captain Darren Sammy is an optimist. You can tell by the way he speaks. In charge of an extremely volatile team plagued by internal issues, reports of the WICB not supporting cricketers enough and talent-drain due to more higher paying cricket leagues, the man comes across as calm and confident.
The team is missing some key players, hasn’t had much success off late and has hardly had any practice or preparation for their series against England that begins today. Yet, according to the ESPNCricinfo website, Sammy believes that his team is “progressing.” And you have to hand it to the man. He isn’t just making a statement for the heck of it. He isn’t ... .. This Monday, James Anderson received a great testimony to his skills and efforts.
