75 days of togetherness for arch rivals produced many thilling moments this year 2009 which finished yesterday with England avoiding 0-7 defeat in one day series that had followed their Ashes win.
Plenty of people visit itsonlycricket.com for full results archive of cricket series. So, here's how Australia's tour of England 2009 panned out, match by match..
1st test : close draw : and an extemely entertaining at that. After England's solid 435/10, Australians batted superbly. 4 batsmen scored century [total = 674/6dec] and visitors pushed for win on last day. Monty Panesar and James Anderson, last English pair, held on for more than 10 overs to earn a draw of substance.

Numerous bilateral ODI cricket series, no team has ever lost 7-0 in best of 7 (aka whitewash). In fact, only 17 cricket series of over 7 games have been played and most dominant result has been 6-1, achieved by India and West Indies.
Today, at Trentbridge, England marched one step closer to becoming first team to reach that embarrassment, after they escaped it in India 11 months ago..
Tim Paine, a rookie wicket keeper that replaced Brad Haddin (who broke his finger some 10th time in his short career), raised his maiden international century yesterday at Trentbridge, scripting Australia's 6th straight win in this 2009 Natwest ODI series. Not a strokeful century it was that ... .. Read complete article |

Little over 24 hours when Sachin Tendulkar scored his 44th ODI hundred, going 18 ahead of his nearest competitor Ricky Ponting, aussie replied back with his 27th century, and a marvelous one at that under lights versus arch rivals England who had set a healthy 299 batting first.
Ricky Ponting, a living statue of courage and inspiration, went through horrible time losing the Ashes and answering tons of question to his seniors who run Cricket Australia and not to forget the media. Somehow, Ricky managed to keep his test and ODI career going, announcing his retirement from Twenty20 cricket.
But, convincing selectors is not enough. Ricky had to prove it on field and he did exactly ... .. Read complete article |

In first two ODIs of this 2009 Natwest series, England proved they can't chase down moderate targets.. in next two, they've now elaborated their inability even in setting decent targets. in short, England's one day batting is, lets just say, poor.
Resultant? Australia 4-0 in 4 played, and English in danger of being whitewashed this summer. 3 games to go.
In fourth game at Lords yesterday, England were off to good start with inform captain Andrew Strauss scoring 63, and at an acceptable strikerate for a change after young Joe Denly became first prey for Brett Lee. Strauss lost a hungry partner in Ravi Bopara who has been hitting balls quite nicely for last 12 games ... .. Read complete article |

Retirement of Brad Hogg opened a slot for a leg spinner in Australian side, and Cameron White was selector's first choice. Having made his debut back in 2005, White had had his share of chances in green & gold jersey but performances failed to appear..
Dropped for couple of years after 6 games, Cameron made a comeback in early 2007 only to lose it again in 2008. Most of 2009 stayed black for this Victoria captain but tour to England so far has been his, all the way.
Good little innings only T20 possible at Manchester last weekend, Cameron White stuck his first half century in first Natwest ODI, then solid 42 in second game and ... .. Read complete article |

Power play in oneday cricket is increasingly becoming interesting. A 5 over slot when only 3 fielders can stay outside 30 yard circle, opted by batting team, is a chance for underdog to counterattack. Excess of 10 runs per over is safely possible provided wickets are in hand or batsmen in middle are capable of clearing infield..
Somehow, England have not yet realized it. In 2nd ODI today, home team commited the same mistake they did couple of days ago, i.e. all hitters dismissed before calling for powerplay.
England were chasing a moderate total = 250 from 50 overs. and got off to solid start with captain Andrew Strauss and Ravi Bopara partnershiping 74 runs ... .. Read complete article |

Cricket, the game we love, is in revolutionary phase. Already 3 formats (Test, ODI & T20) ~ we may see Test-T25 (4 innings, 2 per team, 25 overs each) as suggested by Indian run machine Sachin Tendulkar in a recent interview.
One way or other, Tendulkar's run record doesn't look like breaking, ever..
Otherwise, Callum Ferguson, a young Adelaide batsman, may have challenged Indian batsman's achievements. Less than 25 year old, Ferguson has already played 15 games for Australia and made 449 runs at a solid average of 56.12. In fact, solidarity is something Callum can be given a PHD on. This right hander can play all the shots in book with a defence few bowlers ... .. Read complete article |

Every time there's a rain abandoned cricket match, our minds recall the only indoor cricket stadium in the world = Colonial in Australia. sadly, it doesn't host no cricket games these days and there aren't others coming up..
England, since the begining of this week, woke up to heavy rain and it continued on Tuesday, the scheduled day for this second England vs Australia twenty20 International. note that first twenty20 at the same venue couple of days ago produced a no result as well, cause England chase of 145 was cut shot by showers!
This was the second straight washed out twenty20 game between England and Australia, whose head to head now reads 2 wins for ... .. Read complete article |

Cricket can't get shorter than this. it only takes 6 overs a side to decide a T20 winner but sadly, we couldn't even complete those many overs today at Manchester, before umpires called it rained off..
Australia batted their quota of overs though, scoring below par 145 which commentators claimed could be fightable. and looking at the struggle Aussies had to go through to score that many, English job was never going to be easy.. Old Trafford pitch had spongy bounce about it today, balls going over batsmen's head frequenty. Openers David Warners and Shane Watson failed to find timing and threw their wickets away in frustration. David Hussey, centurion just couple of days ago against Scotland, charged ... .. History repeats itself for Ricky Ponting..
Aussie Run Machine was the first Australian captain to hand over pretigious Ashes urn to England after 19 years in 2005, and now at the same venue (The Oval), Ricky's team failed to defend their trophy in 2009.
Fact : Ricky Ponting is now only second Australian captain to lose two Ashes series in England, since Billy Murdoch in 1890.
An extremely dry pitch for this fifth & final test, Australian think tank made the blunder of not playing a spinner. Their 4 pronged pace attack gave away 307 and 373 runs to which, Aussie batsmen fell short by 197 runs.
Michael Hussey, century-less in ... .. Read complete article |

Headingley may be England's home ground, but Australians have always proved they are the better team at the venue.. This 2009 Ashes test match was 24th at the Leeds ground and now Australians have won 9, England only 7 and 8 have been draws.
A very short test match it was, lasting less than half the time and that too because of a century partnership for 8th wicket between Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann when Australian bowlers started to take it easy. Having bowled the home team out for just 102 in first innings inside 34 overs on day 1, Australia secured a commanding 343 run lead with help of century from Marcus North and 93 from Michael ... .. Michael Clarke, on 92, got lucky. Ball from Stuart Broad kissed his stumps but bails stayed on. Clarke went on to celebrate his 50th test match with a century.
Marcus North, on 96, was unlucky. James Anderson took a blinder at gully that he may have dropped without any criticism. North missed becoming only the 4th Aussie batsman to score 3 century in first 5 tests.
But more importantly, this left-right hand lucky & unlucky combination denied England an imposing 2-0 lead in this 2009 Ashes series. Over half of this Edgbaston test was lost to rain and soggy outfield, yet it turned out to be entertaining till the very end. And England may well have ... .. Read complete article |

A comfortable 115 run win it might seem at the end, it hardly was the case. Andrew Flintoff had to pour in every bit of himself on final day when Aussies needed 209 runs more with 5 wickets standing. Target of 522 was huge, but Michael Clarke's century, Brad Haddin's strokeful 80 and Mitchell Johnson's fifty kept visitors in hunt till the end and English supporters' hearts in their mouth.
Fact : Highest 4th innings score a Lords by any team was 397 by India, back in 2002 but in this 2nd Ashes test match, Australia scored 406.. yet lost the game!

We hear proverbs like "big things come in small packages" or "looks can be deceiving". At Cardiff today, Paul Collingwood proved it in practicality. A tiny England batsman who almost always has a sword hanging over his place in England test side, played an ultimate patient innings, keeping home team's hopes alive of saving the game on last day of this first Ashes 2009 test match as all of his partners fell one by one.
Collingwood's half century came in 165 balls, and he was out after negotiating 245 balls for his 74 runs. he was 9th batsman to fall, leaving last pair of James Anderson and Monty Panesar nearly a dozen overs to play out for an ... .. Read complete article |

It's a dream come true for an England cricketer to feature in Ashes squad versus arch rivals Australians. To captain your team, it's even more prestigious.
Andrew Struass was called upon for captainship when Andrew Flintoff quit it and Kevin Pietersen was removed after undisclosed tussle with then coach Peter Moores. Paul Collingwood refused it and England selectors were left with few options. Fall back option rather than a choice, Andrew Strauss, so far, has lead England cricket team in 7 tests of two series, both against West Indies. His captainship record reads = 2 tests won, 1 lost and 3 draw and 1 abandoned (at Antigua, unfit outfield).

On a flat wicket, Australians pushed for a win and came close to a defeat in this warm-up match against Sussex at hove. A 12 over per side match, Australians elected to bat and posted a healthy 349 at the end of play on day 1.
Simon Katich played the lone hand among top order batsman but vice captain Michael Clarke's 45 and quick fire 69 from wicket keeper Brad Haddin took them part 300. Brett Lee unleashed some good shots towards the wee end of day's play and Australians finished with momentum. 349 for 7 wickets from 90 overs.
