List of leading run scorers in 2013 (tests and ODI).
They say when you find form, fill your boots. cause scoring runs at International level is not an easy business. Batsmen over the years have hit the purple patch but none better than Mohammad Yousuf of Pakistan who made 1788 runs in calender year 2006, breaking Sir Vivian Richards' 30 year old record of most runs in a year in test cricket..

In 2012, Michael Clarke of Australia came utterly close to doing the unthinkable, amassing 1595 runs from only 11 tests including a triple century, which pushed him upto the fourth position in all time list. Alastair Cook (1249), Hashim ... Read complete article

Leading scorers in 2012 : Most runs in tests, ODIs and T20s.
Truth be told, batsmen attract more attention than bowlers. We'll rarely find fans acknowledging good deliveries bowled but every four and six please always please them. Now each year, some batsmen hit the purple patch, and overtake everyone. Here's the list of best batsmen of year 2012..

Leading scorers in tests in 2012

Record of most runs in tests in a year belongs to Mohammad Yusuf of Pakistan who, in 2006, saying change in religion changed his fortunes, broke Sir Vivian Richards' 30 year old record, making 1788 runs from only 11 tests. Who has made most runs in T20 international cricket?
Just 3 T20 internationals in inagural year 2005, 9 in 2006, 38 in 2007 and as many as 68 in 2010 ~ shortest version of cricket has absorbed people's attention and we're ready to exceed the numbers this year in 2012 when 4th world cup of the format will be played.

This brings us to one obvious question = which batsman has made most runs in T20 cricket, internationals that is?

Answer, upto the start of World T20 2012, is Brendon McCullum of New Zealand who was closely followed by Kevin Pietersen, the only other batsman to cross 1000 run mark but his problems with England cricket board has curtailed his career. McCullum will have plenty of chances in next few months ... Read complete article

Record of fastest individual century in Twenty20 (T20) cricket.
Fastest century in test cricket was a list rarely discussed untill one day internationals came along and batsmen started to express themselves more freely. Fastest ODI century is another list that hadn't attracted enough eyeballs before twenty20 cricket came along and batters became carefree..

Fastest T20 century is still an overambitious list as we've had only 9 individual hundreds in the shortest format so far but with increasing number of matches, this list too is bound to change.

Ricky Ponting's test century list : year by year.
Ricky Ponting, best Aussie batter, ever!
Ricky Ponting is the greatest batsman produced by Australian cricket, ever. I know there are many oldies who would argue as Bradman was the best but I firmly believe Sir Don played in an era when cricket wasn't as ruthless and demanding as it is now in modern day when Ponting has mesmerized world wide audiences..

TV replays have made batsmen's life difficult, finding chunk in their armor series after series while Bradman played against just 4 country in his whole career whereas Ricky has centuries against all 9 other test playing nations.

Thinking along those lines, I realised a list of all test century made by Ricky Ponting will be an interesting read, seeing how Aussie run ... Read complete article

Best bowling figures by a bowler in debut test match (& innings).
Narendra Hirwani holds record of best bowling figures in first test match.
Bowlers start a cricket match with an advantage over batters ~ that they can comeback on next delivery despite being hit for a boundary earlier whereas batsmen get just one chance (two if it's a test match). This advantage is vital for bowlers playing their first test match cause they're nervous and undercooked. But what about the bowlers who didn't need a second chance? the ones who discovered gold mine on their maiden matches and mesmerized the opposition..

Narendra Hirwani, the Indian leg spinner, sent no less that 16 out of 20 West Indian batsman back to pavilion in his first test match at Chepauk in Chennai which still is best performance by a bowler on debut. Indian had ... Read complete article

Sachin Tendulkar's records in test matches & one day cricket.
What's driving Sachin Tendulkar?.
Everytime I listen to or read Sachin Tendulkar, Indian run machine never fails to urge youngsters to pursue their dreams. Hard to digest he does so, cause success came his way utterly easily, making his international debut at tender age of 18 and scoring centuries on his Deodhar and Duleep trophy debuts..

I recall reading a mega Sachin Tendulkar interview over a decade and half ago in a magazine called "Cricket Samrat", in which he revealed he only drinks champagnes, that too preciously on celebrations, cause he wanted to play for a long time.

Lowest (smallest) team totals in test matches (all country list).
New Zealand has made the lowest total in test match cricket.
Lowest total in test match cricket has been made by New Zealand = 26 allout, at Eden Park in Auckland back in March 1955..

A test match to forget, New Zealand were in the game even after being dismissed for just 200 in first innings as they had limited visitors for 246 but leg spinner Alex Moir's fifer coupled with 3 wkts for pacer Johnny Hayes ripped them apart in second innings, and wrote the ugliest fact in kiwi international cricket. There have been 10 Asia cup tournaments over the years and asian cricket council seems determined to continue to tradition. Note that we've had two asia cup test series as well, won by Pakistan and Sri Lanka back in year 1999 and 2001 respectively but we may not see another one any time soon. A history of Asia cup cricket tournament over the years..
Asian cricket council organizes Asia cup.
Asia is only continent with enough number of international cricket teams to consist a proper tournament. it was spotted by Asian cricket council (ACC) in 1983 to promote the game & goodwill and very next year we had it's first edition. India has won 5 times, Sri Lanka 4 times upto the 2012 championship while Pakistan have claimed it twice. Sri Lanka are only team to participate in every single asia cup.

We've had two asia cup of test matches as well, won by Pakistan in year 1998 and Sri Lanka in 2001.

All teams test match win-loss-draw summary.
Test cricket is best cricket.
No world cups and almost none triseries (except a few between England, Australia & South Africa centuries ago), test matches have been a neglected format of International cricket. No day-night fixtures to make spectators fill stadiums or watch on television eating dinner and no, we haven't had any rules to make the game more result oriented (one third of tests still end as draw, few interestingly but mostly dull).

That said, test match is undeniably the toughest of 3 formats of cricket and purists (like me) hope senario will change in days to come and historic game will contiue on.

Talking historic, test matches began way back in 1877 when English played Aussies for fun and South Africans ... Read complete article

Performance report of all teams in one day internationals.
Australia is most successful one day team.
First ever one day international happened cause first four days of that 1971 test match between Australia and England were rained off. Australia won that Sydney game by 5 wickets (it was called a knock out match)..

Since then, well over three thousand one day cricket matches have been played which brings us to one important question ~ which team has done the best? Australia, if you ask me. Aussies started day-night cricket during Kerry packer days and continued to host two country every year for tri-series for 14 consecutive years. West Indies were once world champions but Australians too dominated for over a decade, winning 3 consecutive world cups and two of them without a defeat.

Most consecutive wins by a team in T20 matches (without a defeat).
Pakistan hold the record of most consecutive wins in T20 matches.
The record of invincibility in Twenty20 matches now belongs to Australia who broke Pakistan's record of 8 games unbeaten consecutively, back in September 2007.

Australia, the country that holds consecutive win record in tests and onedayers as well, achieved there 12 undefeated t20 run during World T20 2010 before they were beaten by England in final of that Caribbean tournament.

The point to notice in Pakistan's unbeaten run back in 2007 was that it continued through the inagural world t20 tournament in which Pakistan made it to finals, undefeated. For big team scores, openers have to give a bristling start to their innings, utilizing power plays, backed up with strong middle overs and a murderous finish. No wonder, few teams have managed to cross magical mark of double century aka 200 in T20 cricket which, as the name suggests, is just 20 over per innings cricket match!

Present Leader = Sri Lanka. made 260 against minnows Kenya at Johannesburg on 14th September 2007. Sanath Jayasuriya cracked 88 off just 44 balls (11x4, 4x6), Mahela Jayawardene lead strong middle overs, scoring 65 ... Read complete article

Record List : Best Bowling figures in T20 cricket
Ajnatha Mendis holds the record of best bowling in Twenty20 cricket.
You get only 4 overs to spell your magic.. quick and conditional cause fast bowlers can't bowl bouncers or too wide outside stumps. no overstepping the popping crease and field restricted!

No surprises, few bowler have taken more than a wicket an over in Twenty20 cricket.

Umar Gul of Pakistan held the record of best figures in T20 international matches but on 8 August 2011, Ajantha Mendis mesmerised Aussies at Pallekele, registering the first 6 wicket haul in shortest version of cricket, and then repeated the feat against Zimbabweans but only this time, he gave away even fewer runs which now is the best figures. Other bowlers to take 5 wickets in T20 matches are Umar Gul of Pakistan, Tim ... Read complete article

Record List : Most Century (Hundreds) in Test Match Cricket
Sachin Tendulkar has most test match century than any other batsman
Each and every batsman starts with a duck, a zero. Going off the mark, into double figures, half century and then the magical triple figure individual score.. and in between, you run your partner's runs as non-striker as well as resuming your innings the next day which is very very tiring but less highlighted aspect of cricket. indeed making a test match ton isn't a joke!

Sachin Tendulkar is the champion of centuries, in tests as you see in following table as well as of most ODI hundred list. Ricky Ponting of Australia is his closest rival while Protas' Jacques Kallis is silently closing into two legends. Sunil Gavaskar held the record of most test century for a ... Read complete article

Highest Score by a batsman in Twenty20 (T20) Cricket.
Test cricket is where batsmen first defend, calculate and then score runs.
One day Internationals is where batsmen look to attack, but there's a danger of being bowled out before playing full quota of 50 overs.
Twenty20 cricket is were batter don't think one bit, and smash everything from ball one. Selectors even keep those batsman away from this shortest version of international cricket who can't play innovative strokes.
If you like to seeing sixes, T20 is for you.

But very few batsmen have the ability to clear field at will. Chris Gayle of West Indies was the first batsman to reach three figure individual score in 20 over cricket, and we all know how ... Read complete article

Highest individual score by a batsman in test match cricket
Sachin Tendulkar may own the record of the batsman with most runs in test cricket (and in onedayers), Brain Lara, former West Indian artist with bat, will take heart from his highest score by a batsman in an innings which he owned for 9 years before Mathew Hayden broke it.

6 months since Hayden's hurricane against Zimbabweans, at same Venue (Recreation ground in Antigua) and against same opposition (England), Brain Lara snatched back his phenomenal record, scoring the first and only 400 in test match cricket till today.

Drawback : Not that Brain Lara's record can't be broken today, but modern day batters have lost the patience with loads of ODI & T20 cricket played around the world ... Read complete article

Highest individual score by a batsman in one day cricket (ODI)
Rohit Sharma holds the record of highest individual score in one day cricket.
3 years since I analyzed batsmen capable of scoring one day double century, Sachin Tendulkar on 24 Feb 2010 made the first ever ODI double century, off 147 balls. . Inside 5 years, we've had 6 double centuries, four of them by Indians (twice by Rohit Sharma, once each by Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag), one by a West Indian (Chris Gayle) and one by Kiwi Martin Guptill. Doesn't it call for a list of fastest double century in ODIs..?

The record of highest ODI score belongs to Rohit Sharma for his murderous 264 against Sri Lanka back in November 2014. The Indian opener batted ... Read complete article

Record List : Fastest century in One day International cricket
AB de Villiers broke Corey Anderson's record of fastest one day century.
Back at Rajkot on 14 Nov 2008, Yuvraj Singh scored a 64 ball century against England.. That was then the second fastest 100 by an Indian behind 62 ball thriller by Mohammad Azharuddin against New Zealand at Baroda in 17 December 1988 but since then, Virat Kohli has twice broken the record which was later owned by Virender Sehwag with his 60 ball knock.

Yuvraj was injured that day, and hence, had Gautam Gambhir as runner (trick?). Otherwise, I'm sure this Punjab Left hander could have scored the first double century in one day Internationals as well.

Questions poured in ... Read complete article

Record list : Successful 4th Innings chases
Chanderpaul was man of the match at Port of Spain.
The pitch gets rough, the balls keep low. the bowlers are dominating & batsmen are tired of chasing leather all around the park..

In those situations, in test cricket, its very tough for a team to bat last (4th innings) of a test match and overhaul a huge total. Over 2000 test matches so far, only four teams have went on to chase a total of over 400 to win the game. The record, of course, remains with West Indies who scored mammoth 418 for 7 wickets at St Johns in May 2003.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul & Ramnaresh Sarwan scored centuries whereas Brain Lara made crucial fifty to lift his teams moral. I must also mention that the pitch at ... Read complete article

Invincibility in cricket : Record of most test match wins in a row
1854 test matches in all (as I write this) have produced 1197 results, including 2 ties. Hence - 655 were drawn. in other words, every third test match played around the world yields a draw..

But sometimes, some cricket teams attain invincibility as they don't lose or draw any test match they play anywhere in the world BUT and win them all! in a row or in succession (however you like to understand it).

Test cricket record for winning most test matches without losing or drawing but winning, anywhere in the world goes to Australia with 16 games. That winning streak was achieved by Aussies between late 1999 to early 2001 (see list below) under the captainship ... Read complete article

World's best ODI opening pair, ever!
Like dancing, in cricket - it takes two to tango. tangos after tangos, I mean partnerships after partnerships - batsman take their team to victory. without a tango/partner - no batsman can't singly win a cricket match for his team!

If a cricket team's best tango pair is at the top - the opening batsmen, even better.

Following is a story of greatest opening tango pair International cricket has so far witnessed. and I assure you - their record won't in breaking in coming 5 years at least!

Sachin Tendulkar - Right hand mumbai maestro.
Sourav Ganguly - Left hand Bangal tiger.

Best debuts in International test match cricket.
They watch their heroes perform through television. Dreaming they could do the same. One fine day - some lucky young cricketers do embark onto International field (after selectors give the nod) and even special ones - make their debut test match even remarkable with unbelieveable performance.

I've added Michael Clarke's picture in this article before I consider his 154 against India was fantastic. That series was labeled as "Last frontier" by Steve Waugh, when Australia failed to win a series in India. Michael Clarke joined aussie team in place of captain Ricky Ponting & set the tone for that Ind v Aus series.

Another fine debut I personally like in following list is the first one - ... Read complete article

Most runs in a year by a batsman in test match cricket.
Mohammad Yousuf holds record most test runs in a year.
It took 11 matches and 19 innings to Sir Vivian Richards of West Indies to make 1710 runs on one calender year. way back in 1976..

30 years later, Mohammad Yousuf of Pakistan, saying that he found his best form since changing his religion from Christianity to Islam, broke Richards's record with a mind blowing 1788 runs from same number of matches and equal innings. Yousuf made as many as 9 century in year 2006 which also the maximum by any batsman in one year (he was also out for a duck once).

Ricky Ponting of Australia has scored over 1500 runs in a year twice while Sachin Tendulkar's best test year has been 2002 ... Read complete article

Australia hold the record of most consecutive wins in one day cricket.
This is the record of invincibility folks, the record of most one day matches in a row without a defeat..

And the uncrowned winners are Australia, who remained undefeated for 21 consecutive ODIs in year 2003 as you can see in following list, claiming world cup in process as well. In fact, Aussie cricket team features the most number of times which shows their work ethics and hunger for excellence.. something all other teams can take a lesson from.

In following list, we've also listed the teams that brought unbeaten run to a halt, like West Indies did to Aussies in their 2003 campaign.

Most runs conceded by a bowler in an ODI spell.
Second final of the VB series - 2006 between Srilanka and Australia saw a record for Muttiah Muralitharan, which he will never be proud of. He conceded 99 runs in his 10 over, the second most expensive spell by any bowler in one day internationals. The only one who is above him, is Martin Snedden - who gave away 105 runs off his 12 overs, way back in 1983 against England at the Oval.

But Snedden's figures read - 12-01-105-02 which ... Read complete article

Highest score by a batsman on ODI debut..
Desmond Haynes
1970s and 80s were two decades when West Indies dominated world cricket, severely. They had array of cricketers who were performing regularly and then, there were more than a few youngsters who were pushing for a chance..

Desmond Haynes was one of them who got an opportunity to play for mighty Windies team in a one day international at St John's in Antigua in which as many as 14 players made debut (9 from Australia & 5 from West Indies). It was the first game of that 1978 Australia tour of West Indies and Haynes scored a century thats still is the best score by a debutant in ODI after over 3 decades.

A right handed opener, Haynes struck ... Read complete article
