David-Warner-Sydney-South-Africa-230109.jpg 16 days away from cricket and reality sank in to Mitchell Johnson today. Left arm fast bowler had an average last season (good as per Australian performance in 2008), only to return with 71 runs off his 9 overs, claiming lone wicket of Herschelle Gibbs who threw his wicket more than Johnson took it.

Nathan Hauritz, the off-spinner, played for Australia in this Sydney oneday international after almost 6 years, and returned with 60 off his 9 overs. 150kmph fast bowler Shaun Tait bowled 2 no-ball & 2 wides in his 55 run 9.3 overs and Australia ended up giving away 270 runs in 46.3 overs.

South Africa won by 3 wickets with 21 balls remaining (scorecard). The highest total ever chased at Sydney from 132 ODIs played since 13 January 1979.

But, it wasn't as bad for home team when it started. Electing to bat first, young Shaun Marsh & ultra-young David Warner notched up 70 runs off first 10 overs & century opening partnership in just 16 overs. playing infront of his home crowd (Mom, Dad, elder borther & girlfriend too somewhere among 36740 spectators) - David Warner showed glimpse of Sanath Jayasuriya like stand & deliver demolition. We all know he's a mighty fine pull shot player but his off-side play today & running between wickets raised hopes of how dangerous batsman this left-hander could become.. a pocket size dynamite, as Channel 9 commentators like to call him.

Middle order failed miserably for home team who were once looking good for over 300 total. in the end, lower order saw them to respectable 269 before being bowled out.

Australia experimented with their batting power play rule today by opting for it as early as 17th over and made good use of it with 45 runs, mostly from Captain Ricky Ponting's blade itself. South Africa took their batting powerplay from 41st over onwards & complied 41 runs, mainly through Man of the Match Albie Morkel's 22 ball 40 runs.

Jaques Kallis completed his 10,000 runs in oneday international cricket, becoming first South African batsman to achieve the feat, 8th batsman overall. Kallis has 71 half centuries & 16 tons in ODI cricket. also note that Jaques Kallis narrowly missed his 10,000th run in test cricket on this tour, where he's short by 12 runs.
