Day 4 : South Africa need 187 more runs : 7 wickets & a day to goFiled under
AUSvSA Perth Test 2008
I dug out record list for highest 4th innings totals chased in test cricket just 5 days back as India surprised England at Chennai. Their target was 387 - 4th biggest winning total ever made in last innings of a test match.South African target to win this Perth test match is 414, out of which, they have already made 227, losing only 3 wickets thanks to superb captains century by Graeme Smith (108). Proteas, who owns the record for biggest ODI chase (438 vs Australia in Johannesburg in March 2006), will break into that elite record list of test cricket at number 2, if they survive tomorrow. After Smith's inspirational ton, Jaques Kallis showed that Proteas believe they can reach this unlikely target of 414 - by counter-attacking Australian bowlers towards the wee end of day 4's play. 3 fours and 1 six hit by Kallis in last 3 overs, and even AB de Villiers hit final ball of the day for a boundary, which now means South Africa just need to bat out last day and not worry about scoring.. Interestingly, at same WACA ground in Perth, South Africa had successfully batted out Day 5 of last test match they played here, to draw that game. Wicket keeper Mark Boucher is the man to watch out, who struck the ball well in bizzare first innings. Earlier, Brad Haddin chewed his way to 94, practically! Aussie wicket-keeper's innings punctuated 7 hits to boundary and 4 over them. Haddin, in his typical manner, hit straight and strong, showing why Australian selectors were so confident bringing him in, post retirement of legendary Adam Gilchrist. Interesting Fact : South Africa have never lost when Graeme Smith has made a century as captain.. Smith has 14 centuries while leading South Africa, out of which Proteas have won 13 and drawn 1.
