1st ODI : India crush England : 2nd fastest Indian Century by Yuvraj

Filed under Eng in Ind 2009

Yuvraj-Singh-Second-Fast-Indian-Century.jpg 9am start, tinge of grass and hence, England elected to bowl which, at the start, appeared correct decision.. but was it?

387 = India's score = highest total against England ever, from 499 ODIs they have played internationally. beating Pakistan's 353.

158 = India's victory margin = Biggest loss for England against India and 2nd largest victory margin in India vs England ODI cricket after 202 runs win England registered over India at Lords in 1975.. that was a 60 over match.

22 = number of sixes hit = 5th most in an one day International, ever.

Probably no, Kevin Pietersen's decision to invite India to bat first wasn't such a clever decision. In India, when you win the toss - you elect to bat.. period!

Fluent start once again by Gautam Gambhir and Virendra Sehwag, this huge total was constructed around Yuvraj Singh who scored 138 runs off just 78 deliveries with 16 fours and 6 sixes and remained not out.

England never looked in chase after Zaheer Khan made inroads with 3 quick wickets, although Ravindra Bopara & Kevin Pietersen steered their team to a respectable total.

**It was only a 64 yards boundary each side at Madhavrao Scindia ground in Rajkot and as many as 22 sixes were hit. 5th in the list of most in a one day internationals and naturally - some 10 times ball went out of the stadium and 3 thrice it didn't came back.. so, third umpire, who generally does very little, had a busy day as while bringing spare balls.

**Using Runners trick (or probably truly suffering from back ache) Yuvraj Singh, when on 38, took Gautam Gambhir as runner and went on to score 2nd fastest century by an Indian. Fastest century in onedayers is by Mohammad Azharuddin off 62 balls.. Yuvraj made his century in 64 balls.

**Yuvraj's century is now the new record for fastest century against England, beating Sanath Jayasuriya who had struck a 72 ball hundred against the English team.

**New Version of Power plays came into effect from this match where batting team were allowed to decide 5 overs which which, only 3 fielder maximum can be outside the 30 yard circle.. previously - fielding captain opted for all 3 powerplays according to his choice.

**Some 20 thousand spectators witnessed this match which was 10 ODI for India at Rajkot.. they now have won 5 and lost 5. **Gujrat Chief Minister Narendra Modi visited around 3 pm local time when match was basically over and guess what - politicians' arrival stopped the match for good 5 odd minutes who had occupied a prime seat right behind the bowlers arm!!
