Day 5 : Dull draw at Delhi as Anil Kumble retiresFiled under
Ind v Aus Delhi Match 2008
Having declared their first innings at 613/7, India expected to dominate (if not
win) this Delhi test match but they ended up fighting to save it on the last day..
(scorecard).. Australian batsmen played their hearts out to reply
with 577 & gave couple of jittery hours to home team on Day 5, which will now be
remembered as the day when India's best bowler retired.Anil Kumble, a spinner who could hardly spin the ball, only second bowler in history of cricket to take all 10 wickets in an Innings, a man of honor who played with dignity & once bowled with his jaw broken in West Indies (and took Brain Lara's wicket) had suffered a finger injury in this Delhi test match and although he bowled again with 10 stitches (took 3 wickets) - suddenly announced his retirement from the game. Anil Kumble, with 619 wickets is India's highest wicket taker in Test Cricket & 3rd overall. 18 years of test cricket - Anil Kumble bowled 40,850 balls for his 619 wickets (first wicket was Allan Lamb of England and Kumble's last victim was Mitchell Johnson). Kumble, it has to be said, performed his best in Indian conditions cause his overseas 69 matches produced just 269 wickets at an average of 35.85 whereas when playing at home - Kumble proved lethal for opponent batters with 350 wickets at a special average of 24.88 in 63 tests at a strike rate of 59.4! Australian side batted well, but their inability to take 20 wickets were again exposed in this test match. In first test match - they got only 14 Indians batsman out whereas second test match produced just 13 wickets over all.. here at Delhi again - Aussie bowled picked up just 12 wicket and hence - they train in the series which has 1 more match remaining.. starting in 3 days time.
