India beat Australia by their biggest run margin

Tendulkar-Ganguly-Suveniors-Mohali.jpg Only the 5th defeat for Ricky Ponting as captain, but a heavy one. 320 runs victory margin is the biggest win for India against any country (scorecard).

Note : Test match victory margins are also by wickets & innings, which are, obviously, excluded.

'Toss' is ultra important in cricket, so the moment MS Dhoni (stand in captain for injured Anil Kumble) won the coin flip - India were ahead in this second test match at Mohali, October 2008. Good opening partnership followed by steady century by old pro - Sourav Ganguly - India built a healthy total (469).

Since then, Australia were chasing the game & ended up far behind.

This test match will also be remembered as the venue where Sachin Tendulkar broke the record for highest run getting in test match cricket (surpassing Brain Lara of West Indies) & phenomenal debut of Amit Mishra who picked up 7 wickets in total (3rd best bowling by an Indian on debut after Narendra Hirwani & Dilip Doshi).

Confusing decision came about when Match refaree (Chris Broad of England) fined Zaheer Khan with 80% of his match fee for giving a 'send off' to Mathew Hayden.. what Zaheer actually did was he ran around Hayden as he was going into pavilion after being dismissed by Harbhajan Singh. TV Camera's didn't show Zaheer saying something but incident was instantly highlighted by Aussie opener and Match Referee took decision on the 5th day.

Do you know that India needs to win this 2008 series to regain the Border-Gawaskar trophy? the rule says a team has to beat the other arch rival to win back the trophy, otherwise, in case of a draw series, team which won last keeps the trophy!

Another note for Indian fans that India have retained their squad for the last 2 test matches of this series.. their were rumours that Yuvraj Singh will be added to the squad (forseeing injury to Sourav Ganguly) but selectors decided to stick with current squad :

India squad for Delhi & Nagpur test = Anil Kumble (captain), MS Dhoni (vice-captain), Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Virendra Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Subramaniam Badrinath, Harbhajan Singh, Amit Mishra, Zaheer Khan, Rudra Pratap Singh and Munaf Patel.
