Indian oil ODI series gets serious

India vs Pakistan, 3rd ODI Kanpur, 11/11/2007 : India won by 46 runs, lead the series 2-1 with Gwalior & Jaipur games to go..

Afridi-Gambhir.jpg Every who saw, would agree that Kanpur pitch was offering enough for the seamers early on (when Pakistan bowled), and the spinners later on (when India bowled). Yet, somehow, batsman dominated the 97 over day at Kanpur as arch-rivals (Gautam Gambhir & Shahid Afridi had a friendly argument) produced another close cricket match.

India prevailed with 46 runs, but Pakistan had their moments!

Salman Butt scored his 4th hundred (all against India, see notes). At Green Park stadium, the left hander made 29 runs more than a hundred & was second last man out. Until he was at the crease - 47th over - Pakistan had this third onedayer within grasp. Butt hit 10 fours inside first 10 overs (as pak made blistering start), then negotiated testing 30 overs by Indian spinners (when pitch started spinning) as he hit no boundary for next 70 balls. Come 45th over when big hitters like Sohail Tanvir & Abdur rehman departed - Butt took the attack to the Indian bowlers.

At the end, asking rate had gone too high (almost 11) as Pakistan ran out of resources.

To tell you a little about how Indians set the target of 294 : Ganguly-Tendulkar opening pair counter-attacked Shoaib Akhtar & Umar Gul under swinging morning conditions at Uttar Pradesh ground, but scoring rate decreased considerably in the 2nd half of power play. Gambhir-Yuvraj played it safe, before onslaught in the slog overs. A 'typically constructed'/ well made first Innings score was 294.

-Salman Butt's 129 was second century of this Indian Oil Cup between India and Pakistan. and both of them have come from the blades of visitors. Another fact is Salman's Butt's liking to Indian bowlig. The opener made his 4th century and all of them have come against India. Kolkatta, Jamshedpur & Peshawar are the other grounds that Salman 'kissed the pitch' after raising his century!

-At presentation, Man of the match - Yuvraj Singh disclosed that he'd told Mohammad Yousuf not to take run when ball is on the left side of him. Yousuf tried to test Yuvraj's left arm & was runout off direct hit.. for those who don't know - Mohamamd Yousuf has been run out 36 times in ODI cricket. record is 38 by Wasim Akram & Inzamam-ul-Haq!

-Pakistan, although, lost this match by 46 runs, they have beaten India 10 times with a margin over 100. see ind v pak records.

-Twenty20 world cup is long gone, but Indian players are still getting the prizes. At Kanpur, Rudra Pratap Singh & Piyush Chawla (both UP players) were awarded 10 lakh rupees each by UP cheif Minister Mayawati. and talking about Mayawati - the lady minister barred anyone wearing black for this Kanpur 3rd ODI... yes - you read it right. No spectator wearing black was allowed to enter the Green Park stadium.. some changed their cloths, some wore the national flag whereas some fans returned home instead of buying an authorised match ticket! ask why Uttar Pradesh Cheif minister Mayawati did this? - some news agencies claim Mayawati felt people will protest against her at the match.

-I noticed Irfan Pathan bowling at 142.9 kmph... which is good 15 yards quicker than what Irfan was bowling an year ago.
