Baseball baised Cuba to concentrate on cricket

HavanaCricketClubCuba.jpgI'm one of those, who follow nearly all sports Internationally. and the only memory of Cuban sports come to my mind is as the Olympic sprinters or the ladies Volleyball team.

Other than that, I just now learned about the madness Cuba youngsters are grooved into, called Baseball. trouble is, sports embargo imposed by USA for at least 48 years has meant limited opportunities for Cubans breaking into famous baseball leagues..

Where should the talent go? former West Indian & once world record holder for most test wickets - Courtney Walsh visited Cuba few days back, & now says that cricket fans around the world will be surprised by the natural cricketers that country has in store. Athleticism of Cubans was never in doubt, now they've started to catch the line & length as well. Even Indian cricketer Robin Singh was there in Cuba some months ago, harnessing the cricket skills that country already posses.

Reports also suggest that India, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Canada provide donations & cricket equipments in Cuban schools & now Britain is backing Cuba's cricket revolution. UK sports authorities will be making a four-year plan to develop cricket, and plans for an International meet is also been finalized. Recently, we had Mr. Stanford rescuing West Indies cricket by offering 100 million dollars for local twenty20 tournaments, which will also see Cuba cricket team participating.

To know more about Cuba cricket, I suggest readers to try wikipedia. Cuba became ICC Affiliate member in 2002, & have around 2,000 junior & adults playing cricket (almost) professionally. More than 20 teams took part in a national under-15 cricket championship held recently.

Another fine objective behind rising Cuba cricket I see, is making Baseball savvy Americans believe that hitting the ball is even tougher & enjoyable, when it takes one pitch. If tomorrow Cuba plays in cricket World Cup, USA will surely be tempted to think seriously..
