A Steve Waugh trick ~ whole cricket world is using

SteveWaughCricketMastermind.jpgEverybody knows Steve Waugh first made a name for himself when he struck 200 off 425 balls after batting 555 mins against mighty West Indies at Sabina Park (Jamaica) in that cricket defining 1994 series. if you didn't, now you do. I assure you its true. before that, the other Waugh twin (Mark) was lot more famous..

While he played, Steve had a 'very different' approach of batting with tailenders. he'll take a single off the very first ball of an over, to allow opposition a go at other lesser capable batsman. He did that in above mentioned Caribbean test as well, as he did in a Kolkatta test against India (which Aussies lost after forcing follow-on). Steve believed that even the singles that he adds to his team score, off very first ball, will count in the end. the experts debated why not hit 20-30 fast runs before the tail stops wagging.

Today if you look closely into how International sides recover from early loss of 4-5 wickets, is by the better batsman taking safe singles off any ball they can, and tailenders try to face/negotiate at striking end. True today's tail-enders are more of 'lower order batsman', thanks to professional coaches ~ but Steve Waugh trick is very much evident here.

Specially in one day cricket, middle order batsman like Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Michael Hussey, Shaun Pollock and even MS Dhoni of India uses this Waugh trick to cement themselves to the crease first after top order demolition. then evaluate how many wickets they have in hand, to determine when is the LAST TIME when they really have to take risk.. untill that moment comes (usually after the 9th wicket has fallen), they are ready to keep pushing for singles here n there.

You do this correctly, & not waste too many balls yourself for those single, you're in the match.. of course with some help from those batters we don't care much of.

I remember Michael Bevan of same Aussie team was another master of this cricket idea ~ you be there till the last wicket falls.
