In boxing ~ you've to beat the reigning champion, to be called as Numero uno.. I mean world number one.

But not in cricket. South Africa never beat Australia, still marched into Caribbean World Cup as the number 1 cricketing nation. ICC gave them that tag, with quite a bit of manipulation in official cricket ranking method I'm sure. They wanted that 9th cricket world cup to look more close than it really was. Naming South Africa as number 1 cricket playing nation (in ODIs) and giving them a trophy right before tournament started, meant publicity. meant Aussie cricket fans had a challenge to look forward to.

The fact turned reality. South Africa lost to Australia (quite miserably) in an wc group encounter, & then again in 2nd semi-final. Both time, Proteas had no clue to what Aussies were bowling or what bat they were using. Players returned home, and following two things have happened since then --

Powers curtailed : SABC, which stands for South Africa board of cricket has appointed a committee of cricket experts to analyze why South Africa didn't win Caribbean world cup, and reports suggest that powers in hand for Proteas captain & coach Mickey Aurther will be cut short. you must note that south Africa play a 3 ODI series against India at Stormont stadium in Belfast Ireland. They also play a single ODI against host Irish team, on 24th of June. Try this post.

Players being threatened : while giving an interview to Kfm (a local radio station) captain Graeme Smith talked about the hostile environment Indian cricket team faced back home after dismal world cup performance. It was wrongly interpreted by some news people, who said Smith & rest of RSA cricketers have been receiving threatening calls. Graeme Smith clarified it later on, but to set the matter straight Mr. South Africa capatin ~ none of Indian cricketers received such stupid threats.

We Indians are keenly awaiting the Ireland series and look forward you Proteas captain/opener facing our left arm pacer Zaheer Khan.
