Often, some certain batsman or bowler, will hit that purple patch and produce match winning performances one after another. They do that on bilateral series, good, but you ideally want to hit that purple patch during a World tournament, pulling your team through to a trophy to treasure..

Tillakaratne Dilshan did it in 2009, making 317 runs for Sri Lanka which stood as most runs by a batsman in T20 world cup for five years until Virat Kohli arrived in Bangladesh for 2014 edition, collecting 319 runs. Kohli played one match less than Dilshan's 7, and averaged over a hundred per inning.

The only other batsman to cross 300 mark in one T20 world cup, his another Sri Lankan Mahela Jayawardene who did it the next year. This time Sri Lankans failed in the semis. Mathew Hayden (265 runs in 2007), Shane Watson (249 runs in 2012) and Kevin Pietersen (248 runs in 2010) are next best performances.

Who scored most runs in World 2014? following is the final list.

Note : Said to be the first round of the tournament, eight teams (Bangladesh, Ireland, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, Nepal, Hong Kong, Netherlands and UAE) played three matches each which actually were qualifying games as only two of these (Bangladesh and Netherlands) went on to meet other eight teams (Australia, India, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, England, New Zealand and defending champions West Indies) in super 10 stage. Now those three 'qualifying' matches shouldn't have been counted for players in same table as for the players who played less game but ICC disagreed.
