West Indies fill all-rounders for Indian ODIs : Pepsi Cup 2007

It was the 2nd ODI at Jamaica when Yuvraj Singh was bowled off the second last ball of the match, with Indians needing 2 more runs. Yuvraj sat at the pitch for good 5 minutes, as Dwayne Bravo - the bowler, ran all around Sabin Park..

Before that day - 20th May 2005 to be precise, Indian team were on a high after beating Sri Lanka and England comprehensively in home ODIs. On the other hand - West Indies were 8th at ICC ODI rankings and far from confidence..Yuvraj Singh Show.jpg

That 2 hours of Carribean celebration woke up West Indies cricket team, installed confidence that they can beat the best in cricketing business, and went on to beat Australians at Malaysia and in Champions Trophy - the only team to have beaten Aussies resently.

I am very much in favour of our Indian boys showing their fighting-spirits and the joyful celebrations in public, but I hope no one will try to do what Yuvraj did that day. Media is very strong these days and they exgagerate even the tiniest of matters. Even Yuvraj's mother had a cloumn the next day in a news paper, when the fact was we just had lost just match.. off second last ball. We had played very well...

Yuvraj didn't play the next match and that 5 mins of sad-emotions took all the confidence away from our team... and we still are struggling to regain that.

I can certainly understand what Yuvraj felt that moment - I was awake all night as well. I felt exactly the same - but showing your failures to the outside World (and for that longer periods) never earns praise. It's called sympathy and Indian team doesn't need it.

Anyways, the dice has now turned to same India vs West Indies ODI series (4 in all this time), but on our soil. And we must make sure we win all of these to regain confidence. That's not going to be easy, as Caribbean team is playing fabulous fighting cricket these days, but these guys shaked our World Cup plans... now they should be the ones to intall that back for us..!!

West Indies squad for 4 ODI Pepsi series vs India – January 2007

Brain Lara (Captain) Devon Smith
Shivnarine Chanderpaul Rayad Emrit
Chris Gayle Denesh Ramdin
Runako Morton Darren Sammy
Marlon Samuels Ian Bradshaw
Lendl Simmons Jerome Taylor
Dwayne Bravo Darren Powell

The players you may not know
--

Lendl Simmons
: A right handed opener, but his real speciality is patience. I watched him make his debut against Pakistan recently, and reaching 70 once, but in every single match - Lendl Simmons was showing very good head on his shoulders. West Indian batting struggled, but Lendl was up to his job - playing right through the innings.

I am sure West Indies Lendl Simmons will be one man West Indies will look for same job.

Rayad Emrit : Beware of this man. What I hear and read about Rayad Emrit - he is a leathal right arm accurate yorker-bowling all rounder who likes to play patient innings while batting.

But the same can't be said about his bowling. Rayad Emrit from Trinidad has the ability to swing the new ball, and bowl veryBravo Show.jpg fine stright yorkers at the end of an One day International. I am sure West Indies want him to do well, because they have been inserting all rounders like Gayle, Devon Smith, Dwayne Bravo and Samuels in their ODI team, and Rayad may prove blessing for them... if he comes off.

Darren Sammy
: Played 2 ODIs against Bangladesh and New Zealand in 2004's Champions trophy, but was dropped even when West Indies won that trophy. By role - Darren Sammy is another medium-fast all rounder, and he had a good series against Sri Lanka A at home.

The reason he is in this West Indies tour to India 2007 because they want all rounders. Like Ramay Emrit, Devon Smith - Sammy too is given a chance at International level before West Indies finalise their World Cup squad.

Darrel Powell : Right arm fast-medium bowler. 28 years old with 19 tests and 11 ODIs for West Indies.

Why he is in this West Indies squad - because Fidel Edwards has dissappointed. West Indies these days don't depend on their faster men in One day cricket. They play only 3 regular bowlers and then fill-in bowlers. With Ian Bradshaw, Jerome Taylor and perhaps Corey Collymore doing well, Darren Powell don't have much chance. But as there is a "perhaps" linked with ever-injured Corey Collymore, Darren is in.
