Ireland have impressed from the time they pushed Pakistan out of 2007 world cup and are even pushing for test status but for now, they just have to continue doing the best they can in the limited opportunities. World T20 would be a great platform for Irish side to stake their claim once again and here's the squad selected for the Sri Lankan tournament..

Ireland are in tough group B with Australia and West Indies, but captain William Porterfield will see this as a chance to raise eye-brows right from the start. Being an opener, a steady one at that, Porterfield will be required to set the platforms for relatively in-experience middle order.

O'Brien brothers, Kevin and Niall, will be vital for the team with the bat, as well Ed Joyce who's back with Ireland after short England stint and will be important at the top of the order. Paul Stirling is one bulky youngster World fans must watch out for as he can tonk the ball a long way, ideal for the format.

There are several cricketers in the squad who can do dual job, in Alex Cusack, Nigel Jones, Stuart Thompson and Andrew White. and then, there's vetern Trent Johnston.

John Mooney was unlucky to miss out as he injured his finger just a day before the selection, making way for just three uncapped players that squad contains in Stuart Thompson, Tim Murtagh and Max Sorensen.

Coach Phil Simmons, who's been with Ireland team since 2008, expressed satisfaction at the composition of the team. "Everybody has been there before and knows what's expected of them," he said. "It's good for the younger players who will learn how we do things and how we proceed at tournaments."

"It's disappointing for both John [Mooney] and the team. He's suffered two finger injuries and this latest one won't heal in time for the start of the tournament. He's been a major part of the team for the last 3 or 4 years and it's disappointing we have to go without him.??

"This will give others other an opportunity to push for his place and stake a claim. We have guys who can come in and fill the spot and if selected can hopefully fill the role of John Mooney."?

George Dockrell is the specialist spinner in the squad while lanky Boyd Rankin will take the new ball. Gary Wilson is the back-up wicket keeper.
