Head to head

140th England v South Africa test match it was and now, England lead 56 to 30 with 54 draws. In England, two teams clashed for the 63rd time and home team leads 27 to 12 with 24 draws. At the venue, Headingley, this was 13th meeting and England leads 6 to 3 with 4 draws.

End of day 1 : SA 1st inn = 262/5 in 87 ovs (Petersen 124* + Rudolph 1*)
Anxious to snatch some ground after losing the first test, England elected to bowl but the decision seemed to back-fire them as Alviro Petersen and Graeme Smith negotiated their way to a century opening stand. England finally got a break-through in the series after over 10 hours of bowling and then snatched four more including the night watchman Dale Steyn but Petersen continued to bat on.

End of day 2 : Eng 1st inn = 48/0 in 18 ovs (Strauss 19* + Cook 20*)
When you get in, don't throw your wicket away. That's exactly what Alviro Petersen did, holding the innings together and making sure a soild total was raised on the board. English batted well in rain curtailed last session, setting up the game beautifully.

End of day 3 : End 1st inn = 351/5 in 105 ovs (Pietersen 149* + Prior 20*)
Kevin Pietersen once again showed it was a mistake from South African to urge him to shift to England, scoring his 21st test century and saving the innings despite some resilient bowling from visitors. Prior was looking good as the stumps were called for.

End of day 4 : SA 2nd inn = 39/0 in 17 ovs (Rudolph 21* + Smith 17*)
Proteas snatched prized wicket of Peietersen in the very first over of the day and even though Prior continued to fight, English just managed 6 runs lead. South Africans began well once again but rain ate up almost half of the day's play, almost destroying hopes for a decisive result at Leeds.

End of day 5 : end of the match
English bowlers once again couldn't break through in the first session South Africans scored freely. By the time home team got among the wickets, a potent lead was on board and then visitors set the panic into English batting order but time wasn't enough and game was called off as a draw.
