Even though IPL is a long tournament with each of 9 teams playing another twice, losing back to back matches can hamper confidence both in the squad as well as among the fans. Kings XI Punjab hadn't tasted victory so far this season but today they won a good toss, inserted Pune Warriors in on a damp pitch and came out with a comfortable win to open their account..
Mohali is generally a good batting wicket with bit of bounce and movement with the new ball for seamers but today, due to the thunder and showers last evening, pitch had enough encouragement for both the captains to bowl first. Adam Gilchrist got lucky and Sourav Ganguly said his team will deal with it. they didn't, losing opener Jesse Ryder through a poor run out and then Ganguly himself was caught by Shaun Marsh. 3 balls later, Dimitri Mascarenhas castled Marlon Samuels with a perfect outswinger while Harmeet Singh trapped Sri Lankan import Angelo Mathews right in front of wicket.
Robin Uthappa fought for a while before falling to Mascarenhas who was enjoying English like condition, bowling with full run out and extracting swing. Mithun Manhas, playing his first game of the season, hung around for a while but Mascarenhas bowled him too as well as Rahul Sharma to complete his five wicket haul, limiting Warriors to only 115 with one over unbowled.
Ashoke Dinda, termed as the best fast bowler in India by his captain Sourav Ganguly, knocked Paul Valthaty over off the first ball but Aussie pair Adam Gilchrist and Shaun Marsh weathered him and Ashish Nehra well. Marsh, finding form after a horrible summer, stayed till the end to finish the match with Piyush Chawla who was promoted up the order.
