Having lost both matches so far this season, Kolkata came into this match desperate for a win and made the fastest team fifty and century so far in 2012 edition but lost no less than seven wickets in just 37 balls to be restricted to a much lesser total. but then, Bangalore's batting bombed, letting visitors off of the mark in 2012..
An electronic short-circuit forced organisers to delay the match by 20 mins after the toss went in home team's favour and captain Daniel Vettori elected to field. Jacques Kallis flicked couple of fours down the fine leg off the pacer and then swept a six off Muthiah Muralitharan before Gautam Gambhir took over. Kolkata's fifty came in just 5.1 overs and then they reached hundred in just the 11th over with Manvinder Bisla adding 65 runs with Gambhir from just 43 balls but then onwards, some tight bowling from Bangalore's spinners backed up by some acrobatic fielding never let visitors accelerate the way they would have liked, restricting them to just 165 when total over 200 seemed very much possible.
Zaheer Khan bowled the best and also completd 50 wickets in IPL.
Bangalore batsmen just refused to turn up, specially after some firy new ball bowling from Brett Lee and Jacques Kallis. Laxmipathi Balaji, playing his first game of the season, helped himself to four wickets to give Kolkata an easy victory by 42 runs.
Laxmipathi Balaji was named man of the match but Gautam Gambhir played a captain's knock.
