Match 9 : Rohit Sharma evolves Mumbai in tense chase vs Deccan

Tag IPL-2012

All the 8 matches in IPL season 5 so far were non thrillers and even today's clash between Mumbai Indians and Deccan Chargers was going the boring way untill Dale Steyn bowled his heart out, touching over 150kmph, taking a wicket maiden, and raising more than a hope for home team but Rohit Sharma stood calm and smashed a six off the last ball to steer visitors home..

Opposite to preferred way so far this edition, both captains wanted to bat first today but only one was going to get lucky with the toss. Kumar Sangakkara, flying in from Sri Lanka less than 24 hours ago, thumped Harbhajan Singh who'd won all five tosses as captain of Mumbai Indians, and elected to bat.

Shikhar Dhawan lost his opening partner Parthiv Patel early and even Bharat Chipli didn't last long but left hander found his sublime touch, smashing four sixes to give hosts a rocket start before Lasith Malinga showed him the way to dug out. Daniel Christian was promoted up the order but he couldn't accelerate well enough, leaving too much to do for Cameron White. Munaf Patel got four cheap wickets to restrict Deccan to 138 from 20 overs.

Mumbai were off to utterly slow start, thanks to some testing new ball bowling from Dale Steyn. Rohit Sharma stayed calm, added 48 with Ambati Rayudu but asking rate was fast blowing out of proportions. Kieron Pollard's triple sixes provided the much needed acceleration but once again Dale Steyn bowled his two overs cheaply, leaving 18 runs to get from the last over.

James Franklin hit a four and a single off first two balls while Sharma collected held his nerve to hit a six off last ball to win the game.
