Making their debut last season, Sahara Pune Warriors didn't have a home venue, playing their matches at DY Patil stadium in Mumbai but today, brand new stadium was inagurated at the outskirts of the city and home team made a winning start, beating Kings XI Punjab rather convinsingly..
Electing to bat first after a star-studded opening ceremony, Warriors lost their opener Jesse Ryder through a smart work from Praveen Kumar and even though Sourav Ganguly was lucky to find 3 boundaries in his 18 ball stay, runs weren't coming easy untill Marlon Samuels took the center stage. Windies allrounder dominated the 81 runs stand with Robin Uthappa but couldn't detect the leg spinning slower delivery from Harmeet Singh. Something similar happened to Uthappa as well but by now, platform was set for the lower order to end the innings as strongly as they could. Steven Smith provided the acceleration with three sixes, propelling score to solid 166.
Punjab openers began their chase confusingly. There was no communication between the openers and both of them got run out. Mandeep Singh and Abhishek Nayar slowly tried to rebuild the innings but asking rate was quickly blowing out of proportions. Bipul Sharma chanced his arms to give some respectability to the score but Warriors walked off with a comfortable victory by 22 runs mark, going upto second spot in points table.
Marlon Samuels was named man of the match for top scoring in the match as well as bowling his quota of overs, taking wicket of Dimitri Mascarenhas.
