In Twenty20, batsmen are the ones fans fill up the stadiums for and glare at their TV sets. It was a smart thought from IPL organisers to reconise the effort and offer the orange cap to the leading scorers as the tournament unfolds..

Shaun Marsh impressed one and all with his counter-attacking yet classical 616 runs in 2008 edition but Mathew Hayden got hold of the orange cap in 2009 making 572 runs. Sachin Tendulkar's 618 runs in 2010 edition is still the record but Chris Gayle had a big opportunity in 2011 season as he blasted his way to 608 runs from only 12 games. Had he been recruited little early by RCB or even made some more runs in the final match, he would have owned the prestigious record today.

It was obvious that 618 weren't very many runs for a long tournament like IPL and in 2012 edition, Chris Gayle broke Tendulkar's record. sadly, his effort wasn't enough to take RCB into play-offs, falling one step behind..

Gautam Gambhir, captain of Kolkata who won the tournament, Shikhar Dhawan of Deccan who finished second last in the table, Ajinkya Rahane who showed classical shots can also fetch runs in T20 cricket, and Virender Sehwag of Delhi also featured in the top five scorers of the season. Following is the final standings of the best batsmen of 2012 season.
