Tag Asia cup 2012
Bangladesh had been part of 28 one day tournaments with 3 or more teams but reached finals only twice (Associate tri-series in West Indies in 2007 involving Bermuda & Canada and tri-series at home in 2009 involving Sri Lanka & Zimbabwe). Bangla boys won that associates tri-series but it wasn't significant enough, was it? today, they reached final of Asia cup 2012, beating India and Sri Lanka. undoubtably, till date, this 29th tournament is the best effort from tigers..
Needing an outright win to qualify for final, Bangladeshis put forward a collective effort starting from triple strikes from Nazmul Hossain who played this game only because first choice Shafiul Islam was injured, followed by tight bowling from spinners and then Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan's counter attacking partnership. Rain eased home team's target a bit but nothing can be taken away the way Nasir Hossain and Mahmudullah stuck together to take their team over the line. Sri Lankans, on road for last five month playing in South Africa straight to Australia and now here, looked tired and failed to win any match in this tournament. here's how the story unfolded in this last league match..
First two games of this Asia cup were won by team batting first but then onwards, it became one track route ~ win the toss and chase the target under lights when ball came onto the bat nicely. Bangladesh had fallen 21 short of Pakistani target in inagural match but chased superbly against Indians and today they decided not to change the pattern. Lucky with the toss, captain Mushfiqur Rahim elected to bowl and Nazuml Hossain packed off Lankan big guns Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara and Tillakaratne Dilshan in first five overs. At 3 for 32, Lankans were forced to bat time which Lahiru Thirimanne and Chamara Kapugedara did so yet they couldn't accelerate well enough or bat their quota of overs.
Bangladeshi chase had a nightmare start, losing 3 wickets for 40 runs but as soon as ball got little old, batting became easy. Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan added 76 runs off just 73 balls and then when asking rate was below 5 runs an over, Hossain and Mahmudullah drove home team home cautiously yet confidently.
Bangladesh and India finished with 8 points each in table but since Bangladesh had beaten India in league stages, they qualified for final despite having lesser net run rate.
