Rain eats up a keep contest in making : Aussies & Lanka share points.

Tag World-cup-2011

Rain spoiled a good match in making. What had began as probably the most intriguing cricket match of this world cup 2011, ended up being the first no result game as rain refused to abandon Colombo and umpires were forced to call off the match, giving both team a point each..

It was a great toss to win for home team at this RPS ground where 61 times teams have won defending a target under lights but Aussies had made 3 quick break through up the order to keep scoring rate in check. Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara was playing an artistic innings which he had started in aggressive manner besides pinching very quick singles but then had settled down for a longer innings. Mahela Jayawardene had departed after a good half century partnership but Thilan Samarweera was looking comfortable as well and a more than defendable target was seeming within reach of home team specially when pitch was assisting spinners appreciably.

Sadly, ran got graced the venue in it's full glory and soon whole stadium was filled with rain water. This now makes 32 unbeaten games for Australia in world cup, with 30 wins, a tie and now this first no result.
