Best bowling figures by a bowler in debut test match (& innings).Tag
Cricket Records
Bowlers start a cricket match with an advantage over batters ~ that they can comeback on next delivery despite being hit for a baundary earlier whereas batsmen get just one chance (two if it's a test match). This advantage is vital for bowlers playing their first test match cause they're nervous and undercooked. But what about the bowlers who didn't need a second chance? the ones who discovered gold mine on their maiden matches and mesmerised the opposition..Narendra Hirwani, the Indian leg spinner, sent no less that 16 out of 20 West Indian batsman back to pavilion in his first test match at Chepauk in Chennai which still is best performance by a bowler on debut. Indian had batted first, made healthy 382 but Hiwarni wasn't called up to bowl untill last session on second day as the 5th bowler by captain Ravi Shastri. Narendra's first wicket was Richie Richardson, then Gus Logie and then Carl Hooper before day's play finished with Windies tottering at 147 for 5 wickets. Hiwarni took all remaining 5 wickets on day three as visitors slipped to poor 184 allout. Indians declared on 217 for 8 wkts early on day 4 to set an almost unreachable 416. Hiwarni was yet again used as 5th bowler after his record breaking performance in first innings but he provided the first break through enroute to his another 8 wicket haul on debut. Narendra Hirwani's 8 for 61 in first innings and 8 for 75 in second broke 16 year old record held by Bob Massie who too took 16 wickets in his debut test match at Lord's but conceeded a run more. No other bowler has even taken more than 12 wickets on debut. Following list is limited to 10 wicket hauls in a match and 8 wickets in an innings.
