A Look at RPS cricket stadium in colombo.Tag
Cricket Grounds
Is it true that "Rawan of Ramayan" used to live in Lanka which now being knows as Sri Lanka...??
Similarly, the full name of RPS cricket
stadium in Colombo is Ranasinghe Premadasa Stadium, Khettarama,
Colombo in Sri Lanka – named after the former President of Sri
Lanka Ranasinghe Premadasa. And when it comes to playing cricket on
this ground, Indian cricket players have records which are longer
than these above names.. Sachin Tendulkar has scored 3 centuries
at RPS Colombo, so did Sourav Ganguly. Mohammad Kaif, Yuvraj Singh,
Mohammad Azharuddin, Ajay Jadeja and Sehwag have a century each here.
So it won't be wrong in saying that this cricket ground with low and
slow pitches has been a joy ride for Indian batsmen... NO. There was a test match from 2-6 august 1997 against Sri Lanka at RPS Colombo when Indian team
made 537 for 8 declared with centuries from Sidhu, Tendulkar and
Azharuddin. In reply, Sri Lanka lost their first wicket at the score
of 39 and then it took 576 runs and more than 180 over for Indian
team to take the second wicket. Sanath Jayasuriya and Roshan Mahanama
frustrated Indian bowlers for more than two days of test match
cricket and in the end, the test match ended in a tame draw. What
still stands is the final score that Sri Lanka made, which still is
the highest test match score by any team in International test
match cricket – 952 for 6 declared in 271 overs by Sri Lanka.
Sanath Jayasuriya made a score of 340 runs and Mahanama made 225.... If you are an Indian supporter, I am
sure you would like to know that who ultimately broke that highest
ever partnership in test match cricket... well, it was Roshan
Mahanama lbw B Kumble. So now when Indian team goes out to
play 2006 Tri Series, which also includes South Africa, there will be
more than to take revenge off on this cricket ground for them. As far as the previous matches are concerned at RPS cricket ground in Colombo, believe me, most of them has been huge scoring one day internatioanls and teams batting second had no complaints while chasing those big targets as “due factor” comes hard on this ground in the second session. And as all the matches on this cricket ground are Day/Night, I wonder which captain would like to keep his fielders on the slippry boundaries. Related Articles |
