First ever one day international happened cause first four days of that 1971 test match between Australia and England were rained off. Australia won that Sydney game by 5 wickets (it was called a knock out match)..
Since then, well over three thousand one day cricket matches have been played which brings us to one important question ~ which team has done the best? Australia, if you ask me. Aussies started day-night cricket during Kerry packer days and continued to host two country every year for tri-series for 14 consecutive years. West Indies were once world champions but Australians too dominated for over a decade, winning 3 consecutive world cups and two of them without a defeat.
South Africans are close behind in terms of best win percentage. Africans started one day career only in year 1991 (good 2 decades after most major teams) but since then they've been consistently winning. Pakistan is another team that has had a success rate of over 50% almost throughout their career which began an year earlier than arch rivals India who only recently notched up their percentage above more wins than loss.
West Indies is another team that needs a mention. Once unbeatable at home or away, Windies captured first two world cups without a fuss but Indians denied them the hattrick with a freak win in 1983. Caribbean team continued to perform solidly until mid 1990s when they lost their way and haven't put together a stable team yet.
Note that following list is updated upto June 2013, the end of ICC Champions Trophy, and is sorted on number of ODI played by a team (against all teams).
