History repeats itself for Ricky Ponting..
Aussie Run Machine was the first Australian captain to hand over pretigious Ashes urn to England after 19 years in 2005, and now at the same venue (The Oval), Ricky's team failed to defend their trophy in 2009.
Fact : Ricky Ponting is now only second Australian captain to lose two Ashes series in England, since Billy Murdoch in 1890.
An extremely dry pitch for this fifth & final test, Australian think tank made the blunder of not playing a spinner. Their 4 pronged pace attack gave away 307 and 373 runs to which, Aussie batsmen fell short by 197 runs.
Michael Hussey, century-less in last 21 innings, played a fighting knock in visitors overambitious pursuit of 546 in 4th innings on a dusty pitch. Hussey was last man out, sealing an unforgetable win for England.
Interestingly, Australian batsmen made more runs and bowlers got more wickets in this 5 test match series but England won the series 2-1. And hence, regained the Ashes trophy.
It was a test series keenly contested. James Anderson and Monty Panesar, the last pair, played out 69 balls to secure a draw in 1st test match at Cardiff.. a bad miss for visitors it was. 2nd test at Lords marked first England win over Australia at the venue after 75 years! 3rd test match at Edgbaston produced a rain effected draw and then Australia made a remarkable comeback in 4th test at Headlingley, squaring the series 1-1 and since they were the defending winner, a draw in this fifth test match would have done it for team from downunder.. sadly, they failed.
