India vs Pakistan - 2nd ODI at Rawalpindi - 2006.Filed under
Article
Having lost the opening one dayer at Peshawar through DuckWorth Lewis
system (first one dayer at Peshawar), when 18 runs were needed by
Pakistan off 18 balls with just three wickets in hand, India must have
thought that they had a chance but just didn't had the luck..
There was a 5 days break between these two ODI matches as "Moharram" came in between, and it gave Indians a lot of time to rethink their game plan and they did it very nicely.. here's is what happened in the second one dayer of this 5 ODI series in Pakistan - the 2006 Hutch Cup. Injamam won the toss and elected to bat on a pitch that offered some swing to Indian fast bowlers..Due to early start of the match. Pakistan's Batting :- Pakistan lost early wickets, more through over-confident shots from their batsmen than great bowling from Indian si de. After slipping to 68 for 4
in just the 14th over, it was left to Shoaib Mallik and probably the
best batsmen on form for Pakistan - Younis Khan. They made a consious,
but fast partnership of 102 runs but did the same mistake that India
did in the first match - not playing their full quota of 50 overs in a
try to make runs little too quickly. After Shoaib's dismissal, Shahid Afridi and Abdul Razzaq fell quickly to give the edge back to India. Even after a bad start - they could have made 300 runs again but lack of patience costed them dearly. If you look at the sc ore card carefully, after two major innings, the
third highest score was 18 by Shahid Afridi. Another important thing was Indian fielding. They were brilliant in breaking the stumps and ended up getting four run outs in all. Indian Batting :- The pitch had lost everything it had to offer assistance to seam bowlers, if it had anything. Another difference was Sehwag and Tendulkar's watchful start. T hey didn't went
for their shots mindlessly, but waited for bad ball, which they got in
plenty once Pakistan didn't get any early wickets. Sehwag ended up
being run out - A direct throw from fine leg to break the stumps. After
that, Indian Captain Rahul Dravid and Yuvraj Singh played chanceless
innings to knock out Pakistani's even in the 25th over of their
innings. The target of 266 looked way easier than it looks in the score
card.
Another important factor about this easy chase of India was that they again changed their no. 3 and no. 4 batsmen - this time going with regular Rahul Dravid and Yuvraj Singh. They had sent Irfan Pathan and Mahendra Singh Dhoni in first ODI, who played very well but yet again changed the batting order. Seems shuffling the batting order is really working for Indian cricket team. They did this in every match against SriLanka in the home series in November - 2005 as well..
Important note from the match : - 1) The first One day international at Peshawar saw Injamam become the only third batsmen in the history of cricket to be given out - OBSTRUCTING THE FIELD, this match could have easily seen another one as Shoaib Mallik deliberatly kicked the ball away from Zaheer Khan when he was 40 odd. Indian players didn't apealed this time and it was ignored later.. 2) Indians had four runouts in this match. Even the match the day before between SriLanka and Austraila - The first final of the VB series (see the score card) had seen 5 run outs in Australian Innings. Four were done by Tilakratne Dilshan alone!! Related ArticlesArticle
