Ireland Squad for Twenty20 World cup 2009Filed under
Squads - T20 World Cup 2009
If there's a next big cricket team ~ it's Ireland. Don't go by their overall ODI record = 36 games, 13 won, 19 lost, 1 tied and 3 no result. not that it's a bad report card, Ireland have mainly played other less known cricket teams around the world to achieve 40.90% success rate.Fact : Ireland beat Pakistan on 17 March, in 2007 World cup to send them home! Placed with India and Bangaldesh in this second T20 world cup to be played in England from 5th June 2009, Ireland won't bet too much on surprising defending champions but their match against Bangaldesh on 8th June will be a clash of minnows to watch out for. Coached by former West Indies batsman Phil 'chewing gum' Simmons, what makes Ireland a rising cricket team is the same nucleus of players who have been representing Irish squad in last 5 years. here's who they are :- William Porterfield : Captain, only 24 year old and a steady left hand opening batsman. Ireland has many vetern cricketers in their squad but Porterfield has been appointed as leader for long term prospects. Trent Johnston : former captain, 35 year old, right handed lower order batsman and a wicket to wicket medium pacer. Johnston may be losing some hair but he sure knows how to play a cricket match. Niall O'Brien : is chirpy little wicket keeper, 27 year old who plays in Indian cricket league (ICL) and bats left handed. Niall is the biggest motivator in Ireland T20 Squad apart from being a very good batsman. Jeremy Bray : is a 35 year old left handed opening batsman who has been best in Ireland squad for quite some time. Although not very many big scores lately, Jeremy Bray is the risk taker in power plays and crucial wicket in Ireland batting line-up. Kyle McCallan : is 33 year right handed cricketer with experience of 34 one day internationals. McCallan is an offspinner who knows his game very well. Andre Botha : is a 33 year old all rounder but he won't be bowling in the tournament. He's been struggling with ankle injury and will be playing just as a left handed batsman, if at all cause his participation is subject to fitness. Kevin O'Brien : is younger brother of wicket keeper Niall O'Brien, is 25 year old and a good striker of cricket ball lower down the order. Kevin also bowls useful medium pace. Boyd Rankin : is a 25 year old lanky right arm medium fast bowler who is capable of extracting plenty of bounce from pitch. Rankin has played 17 ODIs and also represented Derbyshire in England County cricket. Andrew White : is a 28 year old right handed batsman who also bowls some off-spin when required. Andrew was also the part of World cup 2007 team which beat Pakistan and surprized the world! Paul Stirling : is only 18 year old, just out of High School and is seen as the next best batsman Ireland has ever produced. Regan West : is a 30 year old left handed batsman who also bowls left arm spin which will add more variety to Irish squad. Jon Mooney : is 27 year old left handed batsman who also bowls medium pace. Peter Connell : 27 year old, right handed batsman and also useful swing bowler. Alex Cusack : is 28 year old, bats right handed and bowls medium fast. Gary Wilson : is the reserve wicket keeper and batsman right handed. Photo Quiz : Identify Cricketers | Pictures : Cricketers Wife & Girlfriends Related ArticlesSquads - T20 World Cup 2009
