5th ODI : England register first ever ODI series win in West IndiesFiled under
Eng in WI 2009
England had never won an ODI series in West Indies and even at the start of this 2009 Digicel 5 ODI series, visitors didn't look the superior team but, everything is well that ends well. England edged out windies in the last game on tour to win a trophy, at last, after losing test series and the one off T20 game. Rain shorted fifth and final ODI it was, 29 over per side, at Beausejour Stadium in Sros Islet in St Lucia island, where West Indies invited England to bat first for the 5th time on the tour. Freshness of pitch and moisture in air didn't do too much for Windies fast bowlers as Kevin Pietersen and Ravi Bopara put on 80 runs for the second wicket after early loss of captain Andrew Strauss. Suliemann Benn and Kieron Pollard bowled accurately in the middle overs to limit England acceleration with 2 wickets each. It was left on Paul Collingwood and Wicket keeper Matt Prior to finish off the 29 over innings, and they did well to propel English total to 172. Chasing less than run a ball for only 29 overs, Windies had everything in control until James Anderson removed Chris Gayle off an away going delivery which Andrew Flintoff caught easily at the second slip. Lendl Simmons, Shivnarine Chanderpual, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Dwayne Bravo, Keiorn Pollard and even Denesh Ramdin : all made a start but failed to push on their innings to challenge English target. At the end, a comfortable 25 run victory for visitors and hence, the Digicel Trophy for winning ODI series 3-2. Mini Scorecard : Eng v WI : 5th ODI : St Lucia.
