Australia & Pakistan may play a 5 T20 series before World T20.

Pakistan wants to host 5 T20 series against Australia to prepare for World T20Australia and Pakistan are all set to propose a 5 T20 series to the ICC, and if they get it, it will be the longest ever bilateral Twenty20 International series ever played, happening later this year.

Since it’s a World T20 year, teams are allowed to play 15 ODIs in the year instead of the regular 12, to help them prepare better. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had already proposed a massive 7 T20 series but it was turned down by the ICC, but with both nations vying to it, the 5 T20 series could indeed be a possibility. The problem now is finding a suitable venue. Hosts Pakistan have choices of the UAE or Malaysia, but the latter might be confirmed later on as the UAE will turn out to be pretty expensive and the immense her this time of year will also come into play.

Cricket Australia’s (CA) chief executive James Sutherland was quoted saying that it (the series) was a potential option for the PCB and CA to explore the August series.

“Pakistan have had some issues with determining a venue for the series,” Sutherland said. “Part of that perhaps relates to weather issues and challenges with heat if it happens to be played in the UAE. It makes sense as a follow-up to that, if the matches are played there, in order to avoid the heat you reduce the number of one-day internationals you play, and you play Twenty20s [instead].

“We haven't had any formal discussions about that but at some stage it may well be that we need to talk to the ICC about that. There is good reason why the ICC has decided that only a limited number of Twenty20 matches can be played in one particular series. But in the first instance it's up to Pakistan to determine the format of the series that they think is going to work out. They need a venue first. It may well be we then put a formal proposition to the ICC that in exceptional circumstances it might be an option that they look favorably on.”

Australia have played only 4 T20s this year and their upcoming tour of England has only ODIs. Pakistan have played 5 and have no more T20s in this year’s schedule, apart from the Australia series. With the World T20 coming up fast, this extra-long series might just be what the two teams need to have a bit of an edge over everyone else, including Pak’s archrivals India and current champs England.
