Brendon McCullum wants Ryder back in the team, with respect. posted under: New Zealand | All news |
New Zealand vice-captain and ace wicket-keeper Brendon McCullum has said that he wants Jesse Ryder back on the team. The troubled cricketer was dropped under certain circumstances back in March.
In an interview with Radiosport, McCullum said he felt Ryder was in a ‘really good place’ when they hung out during the IPL for around two months. He also added that Ryder had to to whatever made him happy and that he had to get himself to where he needed to be.
McCullum was later quoted saying: “His talent is unquestionable but his respect within the team needs to be continued to be re-earned. You want to know every time you go into battle the guy standing next to you is equally committed as you are, and I guess that's been questioned on a couple of occasions with Jess, and we now know there have been a few issues that he's had to deal with, and I'm talking out of school here because I've told him honestly what I think as well, and I'm sure he won't mind me commenting on it.”
McCullum added that New Zealand would definitely benefit if Ryder made a comeback.
Jesse and his teammate Doug Bracewell were slapped with a one-match ban during their matches against South Africa at home in March, after they went out drinking while they were injured, and getting into a scuffle with a patron, breaching team protocols. Ryder was subsequently dropped from the squad and hasn’t played for the team since.
After Ryder avoided signing a 2012-13 central contract with the NZC, his manager Aaron Klee was quoted by a website saying that the batsman was not ready for such a commitment. Klee confirmed that Ryder wanted to play for New Zealand and did not want to become a T20 freelancer.
NZCPA Chief Executive Heath Mills said the players’ association is pleased with the review process and the approach Ryder is taking. He was quoted by a cricket website saying: “Jesse spoke positively about the things he wants to achieve and we are keen to support him.”
Ryder played for the Pune Warriors India in this past season of IPL, getting 256 runs in 11 innings. He has a lot of potential and if timed right, his comeback would be a thing to watch.
