ICC urges global lifetime ban for Danish Kaneria.

Danish Kaneria.Cricket in Pakistan has never been this bad. It’s not just their recent horrendous performances that have been making headlines all around the world. Some of Pakistan’s current and former players have been linked with spot-fixing, corruption and most recently, tax evasion. The worst of all these is the situation of Danish Kaneria.

In a cricket board meeting held in Kuala Lumpur which lasted a few days, the International Cricket Council (ICC) spoke about Kaneria and his spot-fixing charges, urging a worldwide life-time ban to be placed on the Pakistani leg-spinner. The ICC said in a statement that domestic bodies “should recognize and respect the sanctions... including by enforcing and giving effect to them within their own jurisdictions to the fullest extent permitted by law.”

Back in 2009, Kaneria was involved in a spot-fixing scandal and has been named the main link between bookmakers and players at the time. According to reports, youngster Mervyn Westfield had accepted £6,000 ($9,346) to underperform in a Pro40 match between Essex and Durham.

Westfield, now 24, named Kaneria as his main contact and pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to 4 months in prison but was released after two, and was given a 5-year ban for bringing cricket into disrepute, which he accepted. He will however, be allowed to play club cricket in the final two years of his suspension.

Kaneria’s last appearance for the Pakistan national team was against England in August 2010, the same tour which brought to light match-fixing allegations in the Lord’s Test, leading to the then captain Salman Butt, bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer’s imprisonment and bans on charges of corruption. Kaneria has vowed to clear his name of the charges and has said that he’s innocent.

The ICC has been facing many similar problems, the most common being players who bowl deliberate no-balls by bookmakers’ orders. This was a topic along with many others that the board brought up at its annual conference in Malaysia’s capital, which ends today. The move against Kaneria, should it be placed, will be a strong warning to anyone associated with the game.
