Shoaib Malik plays in local DDCA tournament, BCCI clueless.

Shoaib Mallik.Reports say that Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik played a cricket match in a Delhi tournament, even though foreign cricketers have been banned from participating in any domestic tournaments apart from the IPL, for almost 4 years. The BCCI was unaware of the happenings..

Malik played one match for Hargopal CC against Sporting Club in the Lala Raghubir Hot Weather tournament. It was a 40-over one-day match and the batsman had scored 26.

One conditions of anonymity, a senior BCCI official spoke about the incident and was quoted saying: “This is news to us that Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik has played in a DDCA affiliated tournament. We haven't received any prior intimation from the state association that a foreign cricketer is playing in an Indian club level tournament. The BCCI has already made it a rule that no foreign cricketer is allowed in any domestic tournament (barring IPL).”

Malik played the match at the Modern School (Barakhamba Road) ground on June the 5th. He had arrived the same morning after finishing a T20 match against Sri Lanka the previous night. However, the Delhi and Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) secretary SK Bansal seemed ignorant about the BCCI ruling when he was contacted and questioned regarding the whole scenario.

“We never had an idea that we need to seek BCCI permission for Malik's inclusion in the Lala Raghubir Trophy. In fact, he played in another tournament in Delhi last year and no permission was sought then,” he was quoted saying.

Although the rule of not allowing foreign players in domestic tourneys has been in effect for almost 4 years now, there have been other occurrences when this has happened. Sri Lankan bowler Chaminda Vaas had played for Mohun Bagan in the JC Mukherjee T20 tournament in 2009 and Bangladeshi spinner Mohammed Rafique had played for Kalighat in an AN Ghosh trophy final against Sporting Union back in 2008. It will be interesting how the BCCI reacts to this fresh situation and if a penalty is placed, the club and the player might dig up old graves.
