Chelsea star Didier Drogba thought cricket was very ‘long’. posted under: India | All news |
Ivory Coast’s star football player and Chelsea’s legendary Didier Drogba was in Delhi to promote a short football tournament organised by a soft drink brand he endorses. Without wasting much time and much like the dribbles and tackles he displays on field, Drogba got down to business immediately. No sooner had he touched down that he held a press conference and around five thousand fans came to catch a glimpse of one of the most popular football players in the world.
The Indian cricket team had a number of players (who endorse the same soft drink brand as Drogba) in attendance and for once, the men in blue who are usually the centre of attraction, themselves appeared to be star struck. Drogba had mingled with Indian cricketers earlier during the shoot of an advertisement, lauded India’s world cup win in 2011 and said that he personally followed India’s triumph, but found the game to be a little long.
Drogba also jested that he found it hard to pronounce Indian player names and found Indian skipper Dhoni to be a good leader, but thought his name to be the hardest to pronounce! Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor too was present, along with cricketers MS Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina and Murali Vijay. Former Indian football star Bhaichung Bhutia too was there.
Before his shoot though, Drogba received some tips from his former Chelsea team-mates Frank Lampard and Fernando Torres. Following Chelsea’s 2012 Champion’s League victory, Drogba quit the team, but his future plans are uncertain.
Drogba may know little about cricket, a game that doesn’t require the endorsement of any global sports star, but his kids certainly do. They play cricket in their school in England and seem to show more interest in the battle of bat and ball, rather than their superstar father’s sport. |
