Aussies interview Waqar Younis for bowling coach's job. posted under: Australia | All news |
Cricket Australia has interviewed and is likely to hire former Pakistan captain and coach Waqar Younis as bowling coach Craig McDermott’s replacement.
Younis finished his two year role as Pakistan’s coach in 2011 and is currently based in Sydney. According to reports, he has spoken to CA’s team performance manager Pat Howard about taking over since McDermott suddenly vacated the spot after the Australian tour of the West Indies. Two other possible replacements Jason Gillespie and Ali de Winter are currently under contracts with Yorkshire and Tasmania respectively.
McDermott, 47, had worked with the Australians for a year and had helped them develop as conventional bowlers, bowling full and straight, in unhelpful conditions in Sri Lanka and West Indies. Now they can work on their reverse swing, wich was mastered by Waqar Younis back in the day, helping him get 373 wickets in 87 tests and 416 from 262 ODIs. Younis had cited personal and health problems as his reason for resigning as Pak coach.
Waqar Younis’ coaching history includes many short-term consultancy roles including with the ECB academy on a tour to India and has also worked with New South Wales since moving to Sydney with his family in 2005.
The Aussies have struggled a lot in the reverse-swing department and Younis just might be the perfect coach to give them a clear advantage as bowlers. They have already perfected how to be full and straight and bowl conventionally, add a little Waqar zing to it and they should be near impeccable.
During his playing days, Younis partnered Wasim Akram to form one of the most dangerous bowling pairs. At his peak, his was said to be the fastest ‘toe-crunching’ yorker. Younis took 373 wickets in 87 test matches - over hundred of them came in five wicket hauls. He also took 416 wickets in 262 one day games – 65 of them in five wicket hauls. |
