The 16th match of that Bensen & Hedges world cup, Indians elected to bat at Sydney and then platform was set by solid innings from opener Ajay Jadeja, captain Md Azharuddin and Vinod Kambli before Sachin Tendulkar and Kapil Dev accelerated their team to moderate 216 from quota of 49 overs. Pakistani left handed opener Aamer Sohail top scored in the match and Javed Miandad continued to fight till late but Indian bowlers easily defended their total. Sachin Tendulkar was awarded man of the match.

A quaterfinal match of Wills world cup at Chinnawamy Stadium in Bangalore started with a lot of buzz and home team got off to brisk start with Sachin Tendulkar and Navjot Singh Sidhu adding 90 runs for opening wicket. Aamer Sohail, Mushtaq Ahmed and Saleem Malik bowled well in middle overs but then came Ajay Jadeja who collected 22 runs from Waqar Younis' over, propelling Indian total to 287. Saeed Anwar and Aamer Sohail gave Pakistan a rocket start, collecting 84 runs from first 10 overs but a magical delivery from Venkatesh Prasad drew first blood for home team and soon they wrapped up the game for a 39 run victory. This was the first Day-night ODI at Bangalore and India's first win over Pakistan since 1992 world cup! Navjot Singh Sidhu was given man of the match.

34th match of the tournament, a super sixes match, Indians elected to bat at Old Trafford and began hesitently scoring 37 from first 11 overs against pace attack of Wasim Akram, Shoiab Akhtar and Abdul Razzaq. Rahul Dravid held the middle order with a half century while acceleration came from captain Md Azharuddin yet Indians finished with moderate 227. Venkatesh Prasad once again proved to be Pakistan's nemesis as he took 5 wickets while Javagal Srinath and Anil Kumble took 3 and 2 wickets respectively. Green team were bowled out well short of their target. Venkatesh Prasad was man of the match.

The 36th match of the championship, Pakistan changed the pattern by electing to bat first and Saeed Anwar's century stretched them to 273, assisted by brisk innings from Younis Khan and keper Rashid Latif but what followed was never seen before in ODI cricket ever before. Sachin Tendulkar and Virendra Sehwag smashed high profile Pakistan fast bowling comprising Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Shoaib Akhtar all around Centurion Park, mainly over the third man boundary. Tendulkar couldn't raise 3 figure score but this was easily his best score in nineties. Waqar Younis bowled array of yorkers to make sort of comeback for Pakistan but Rahul Dravid and Yuvraj Singh added 99 runs unseparated to steer Indians home. Sachin Tendulkar was man of the match.

It was the semi final, at PCA stadium in Mohali, and ended up being the most watched cricket match ever, falling in Indian favor once again. Indians had got off to rocket start but Sachin Tendulkar, living a charmed life of 4 chances, mae sure India made a foundation for reasonable score with his 85 desite young Wahab Riaz taking career best 5 wicket haul. Suresh Raina's unbeaten innings saw home team past 250 run mark but match was still hanging in balance. Pakistani openers began well but careless shots from middle order and an utterly slow show from Misbah-ul-Haq took asking run rate out of visitors range and home team won by 29 runs.
India 260 for 9 wickets from 50 overs (S Tendulkar 85, V Sehwag 38, W Riaz 5/46).
Pakistan 231 all out in 49.5 overs (Misbah 56, Nehra 2/33, Munaf 3/40, Harbhajan 2/43).
