MS Dhoni was first appointed captain of India in 2008 and already he's already THE most successful captain for the country, ever, over all formats. Here's his comparison with Mohammad Azharuddin and Sourav Ganguly who once had won most tests & ODIs for Indian team.

Note : Graeme Smith and Ricky Ponting hold test & ODI overall records respectively.

One day matches
MS Dhoni = 163 ODIs = 91 wins, 58 loss, 4 tied & 10 no results.
Md Azhadurddin = 174 ODIs = 90 wins, 76 loss, 2 tied & 6 NR.
Sourav Ganguly = 146 ODIs = 76 wins, 65 loss, 0 tied & 5 NR.
Rahul Dravid = 79 ODIs = 42 wins, 33 loss, 0 tied & 4 NR.
Kapil Dev = 74 ODIs = 39 wins, 33 loss, 0 tied, 2 no results.
Sachin Tendulkar = 73 ODIs = 23 wins, 43 loss, 1 tied, 6 NR.

Test matches
MS Dhoni = 58 tests = 27 wins, 17 loss, 14 draws.
Sourav Ganguly = 49 tests = 21 wins, 13 loss, 15 draws.
Md Azharuddin = 47 tests = 14 wins, 14 loss, 19 draws.
Sunil Gavaskar = 47 tests = 9 wins, 8 loss, 30 draws.
Tiger Pataudi = 40 tests = 9 wins, 19 loss, 12 draws.
Rahul Dravid = 25 tests = 8 wins, 6 loss, 11 draws.

Under MS Dhoni's captainship, India has played 48 T20 matches, won 26, lost 20, tied 1 and 1 was no result. Virender Sehwag once and Suresh Raina thrice have lead India in T20 matches, and they have cent percent win record so far.
