The first ever test match was played at Melbourne cricket ground in Melbourne, between England and Australia, back in 15 to 19 March 1877. It was a four ball per over match in which Australia elected to bat first and went on to win the match by 45 runs.

The first ever one day international was also played at the same venue, Melbourne cricket ground, almost a century later, on 5 January 1971. It was a 8 ball per over 40 over each side match and Australia once again won it, this time by 5 wickets. It was then called as knock-out match as it was shortened from a test match where first four days were washed off but later renamed as one day international.
